Hunting Season

Hunting season permanently ended for me years ago when I realized between all the needed gear, clothing, and somehow finding a person with the land that was willing to let me hunt on it that it's basically amounted to a gigantic money and time sink even if I did somehow get a good place to hunt. Most people pay in way more than they ever get out of it as the end result, and quite frankly killing the animal was way more of a job than it was any fun, not to mention sitting in the cold half the day sucked, not to mention gutting animals in the cold sucked even more when I could pay just as much to almost get that amount of meat at a grocery store after sitting home wrapped in a warm blanket all day. Too many things have destroyed hunting and fishing for me. Not having a lot of money being (or the government making hunting expensive) one of them, with no longer having any land being a close second.

No State game lands?:dunno:

As far as the gear I have a hat, fleece one for the winter, long sleave t-shirt, hoodie, jacket, pants, boots, tree stand. I have had that stuff for a few years. I have no need to stay up with the latest and greatest gear, I know what works for me and that's what I use.

Also i get a lot for my Birthday and Xmas, that way I don't have to pay for them or gift cards for the gear.

Not if you don't want to either walk 20 miles into one or have to share your space with a bunch of idiots who will be there and probalby screw with you or your hunt or make you worry about both of our safetly because they don't know what they are doing.

Everyone should experience hunting at least once in their life. Especially before they start bashing it. I think you should take the plunge and try it out!

I haven't posted in this thread because I am not a hunting enthusiast and essentially see it as a barbaric activity (unless doing it for survival) but I don't begrudge anyone who is into it....it's just not my thing.

I agree everyone should try it. I went bird hunting with a buddy of mine when I was in my teens and I shot a bird just for the sole purpose of killing it. I felt horrible afterward and have never hunted since.

I will have you know that whatever animal that I bag we eat. Deer, turkey, rabitt and hopefully Elk. Steaks, burgers and JERKY. Even the inners are used as well really nothing goes to waste.

OK well that's great. Like I said, I don't begrudge anyone who does it your way. I'm just not into it. That's OK with you too I hope.

Hey I'm glad you tried it. It's not for everyone and surely not a necessity any more. It's too bad people don't have the same judgment as you though. It's almost impossible to explain it to someone who thinks its all about killing fuzzy little animals. Ever tried to hug a real bear? It probably wouldn't work out. Also most who bash the sport would probably run in fear from most woodland creatures.

Hunting gives me a better understanding of whats around me and how I can survive in the world without having to rely on a supermarket.:2 cents:

Not to mention healthier eating. A lot of food in supermarkets are packed full of crap from steroids, preservatives, pesticides, and God knows what else.

Also, a real hunter with respect towards wildlife will shoot to kill, not shoot to mildly wound to track the blood pretending they are the best at tracking or whatever they think they are doing in their warped minds.

I mean, sometimes the shot won't always kill, but that's when you go after it and make sure it is dead. A lot of variables when it comes to that. Thing is, shoot to kill; not for game.

Hope to get back up north to deer hunt this year...just can't get into using dogs like they do down here in the south.

WHAT dogs for a deer hunt?

yea, they use dogs to 'run deer'...the excuse and it is valid, is that in the thick ass brush down here its to hard to stand or still hunt...i call BS personally, as I see plenty of small clearings. I think it is just a lazy way of hunting. When we used to do 'drives' back home, having a group of 5-10 of us trying to angle deer into a shooting area, that was usually a last resort for closing weekend if it was a down year. I prefer to still hunt, both with bow and rifle. To each their own I suppose.

Yea on the last day of the season we do drives to get a deer if someone has not gotten one. Have they ever heard of a tree stand or blind?

nah, that would take to much work ;) Not all southern hunters use dogs, but I would say there is a strong percentage that do. The only times we used dogs in my neck of the woods was for coons or bird hunting and sometimes rabbit (although I preferred stalking/still hunting for rabbits/ birds, you just got to use dogs to be effective and same with coon.)

I haven't been hunting in years. My grampa would take me out when I was a kid. Bought me my first rifle, and my shotgun. I killed a couple of turkey, and a deer. All fine and good, but for me hunting was mostly about the bonding experience. Spending time with the old man in the woods. Now his legs bother him too much for him to go hiking the trails back to the stands. I know he misses it. He bought a wii, and every hunting game he could find for it. As for me, it just wouldn't be the same. I like game meat, but not enough to get up that early in weather that cold. lol. I know, I'm a wuss. We buy venison from the hunters up our way. :)
