But it was kinda interesting.

But they thought they were getting email from an official place. It's not their fault really.

thats why you never open an email from anyone that you do not know

What if they had hacked MySpace instead of *******.com, then MySpace sent you this "great update" to download. You'd open mail from them wouldn't you? Tell me they don't have your email. :dunno:

Come on, lets be fair these people joined that site with the same confidence others join EBay and many other similar sites. For a service and in confidence. You can't blame the people, I just hope word spreads fast enough on whats going on. That's like blaming the people that die in a plane crash for their own death, because they got on the plane.

Do you know what *******.com is?

the online Book store

I am a member of Myspace, they never ever send me any emails, and if they did I would not even consider opening them. I don't have any spare money to put towards fixing my computer

thats why you take your own parachute on the plane with you.:1orglaugh

I joined ebay and many other sites, that send me emails every so often, I have used the same email for every site that is not the same as the one I give to ****** and friends and employees and trustworthy people that I have met face to face. I only ever open this email account up to delete the emails that I have got.

even if they say "you have just won $1000,000" "free Caribbean Cruise" I just laugh and think of all the people that are sucked into believing these emails. I do the same thing when I get those phony cheques in the mail, I just shove them right back into the mail slot

*******.com is a job placement/search site.

See this was my point. The site is a very famous one that provides a service. That's not people haphazardly giving out their email addresses, it is a bit different. Of course I do realize anything that any of us do on the net is a crap shoot at best. Its just very scary when those you figure to be "more" safe fail on such a large scale.

what does email have to do with identity theft?

it's like my *** that thinks that just by going online people can hack into your computer. I'm like first of all, why would anyone want to do that? secondly, do you have your social security number or your bank account or any personal information on your computer? No? well then how the fuck are people going to be able to find that out by hacking into it?

everyone in the world allready has your email adress. that's public knowledge. it's just like your phone number. it's not like you can use someones phone number to take out a loan. all you can do is call/email them trying to sell ****, which unless you say "yes! sign me up, and here's my REAL personal info..." it's just a ***** inconvience and a waste of your time.

and people DO hack myspace all the time. they post spam messages on there. they don't commit identity theft because there is no personal identity information opn myspace. Now, that's not the case with *******, since it's about job placement there could be real information that people could use against you. But that doesn't have anything to do with email, that's my point.

The people are sending official looking emails to the people that do business with the real site, telling them to download a new version of something and when they do it opens a door to your computer. All passwords and all information. A lot of people do have that personal information on their computers, sorry to bring the news. Our banks are all on computers, all businesses are, everything is these days. As I said, anyone on a computer isn't safe. Its a crap shoot at best.

To the bold above. *With all the other information available to you, yes you can use the phone to open accounts. ;) Phone # and zip code are often the only simple "verifications" needed to do many things.*

ok first of all, the problem is because they Downloaded a program ON there computer that relies information. that's not hacking. that's them opening up the door and saying come in. that doesn't happen simply because someone has your email adress, nor does it happen from opening an email.

secondly, why would you have that information on your computer in the first place? See, now THAT is stupid. Yes, the Bank has your info on thier computers, but no one is hacking into the banks computer system. If it's not there, then people aren't going to be able to magically have access to it.

see I was under the impression that someone had pirated there way into the ******* dot com files and accessed the personal info that they had stored on there that members had shared thinking that it was secure. What really happened was just people being stupid.

so to sum things up, if you put personal information in a public forum and allow people to have access to it, then they will. If you don't then they won't and it will be really difficult for them to find that out and they will probably be going after someone that is a lot more worth it than you.

1. Don't keep personal information on your computer. If you have to share it use a company that is trusted for security AND guarantees that they will back you up, so that if it does get compromised, you won't get screwed.

2. Don't download anything from an email. One of the above mentioned sites is going to have the info on there network, they don't need to put anything on your computer. That's a clue right there you should be suspicious of. and if you do download something from them, it will be hosted on thier official site, not on something like email that anyone can acess and lie about who they are.

as to using a totally public and known information as means of verification, I don't know whethere to believe it. that's really stupid, and I think if that was the case, then everyone would be an idenity theft victim and people would be using my email and phone number to get real money instead of calling me up and begging me for it.

They got into *******.com and stole 1.6 million files. Containing resumes with names, addresses, phone #'s, schools attended as well as work history etc. Along with other various information.

secondly, why would you have that information on your computer in the first place? See, now THAT is stupid. Yes, the Bank has your info on thier computers, but no one is hacking into the banks computer system. If it's not there, then people aren't going to be able to magically have access to it.

I never said it was the thing to do, I simply said many people do it. :) If you think they don't, I really don't know what to tell you. :dunno:

That's just what they did do, as I said its apparently a "in stages" thing. They are reaping all they can. The email "download this" thing is just the second phase to catch those that will fall for it. If someone does then they're in that persons computer.

so to sum things up, if you put personal information in a public forum and allow people to have access to it, then they will. If you don't then they won't and it will be really difficult for them to find that out and they will probably be going after someone that is a lot more worth it than you.

None of these victims allowed access nor was it on a public forum. Did you read the report at all or just the posts?

I won't address the two that are numbered. I'm not a ***** and I'm sure everyone here is aware of those internet golden rules.

As for the "bold" Again the point was missed in what I said.

I never said with only a phone # or zip. I know that can't be done. lol

I really only started this thread to make other members aware of what was going on. I know many people use that site. I had two calls from friends today who belonged. I'm glad nobody here has said they belonged.
