Shoot a lot of pictures with a lot of different settings. Keep in mind Ansel Adams and Edward Weston never had digital to play with. Learn the basics of a film SLR and translate it to your DSLR. Learn about RAW images. There are many great books available that will walk you through the basics, but in the end, you will either have an eye for photography or you won't. It's not something anyone can just pick up a camera and do successfully.
