How can I make gif files from video files already on my pc??

I have searched the forums a bit and have found some sites with gifs but... A friend told me he thought you could make your own gifs and I was instantly amazed and like WOW! If anyone knows what program I need or anything I would be very greatful! Thanks

I just use "convert" (from ImageMagick) -- simple, effective open source tool.
There are a few GUIs built around it too.

thanks! Uh question though? How come when I make a gif on Animation Shop the finished pic doesnt have a really good quality?

The color palette of GIFs is typically 8-bit (256 color) maximum.
That's fine if all colors used fit into 256 colors (from the full palette of millions).
But if there are more than 256 used, you'll have some loss.
And there are other issues (long, involved story), but that's typically the big one.

You're better off building a MPEG at some point.
MPEG is inter-frame compressed MJPEG (Motion JPEG).

You guys are so smart... Im gonna post my first gif image that I made in the gif thread later :) Are you guys good with signitures too? I want to have an animated Veronika Zemanova one and I was trying to make one from AS3 and I was getting a bit frustrated with it lol.:glugglug: *cheers to all the cool people of freeones*

Smarts have nothing to do with it ...

Smarts have nothing to do with it.
I was an average student in school and I'm sure my IQ isn't much beyond 100 at all.

It has to do with experience, of which, I'm not a guru with A/V formats either.
But I have enough to know some of what I'm talking about, although I'm not always current (which people have to correct me sometimes).

People who have IT experience aren't "smart" in general, and I hate the concept that "computer people are smart."
Hell, I often have to stop my grandma who loves to brag I used to work for NASA, has nothing to do with "smart."
