Everyone needs to go out and rent "See No Evil" staring Kane from the WWE. It is a pretty scary movie. I almost spiled my popcorn watching it.

If I remember correctly, there is this scene where the this chick is forced to swallow her cell phone. I had my eyes closed for a good portion of the movie, so I can't remember all the details

The kid made barely any real appearance, mostly it was his mother.. the raven-tressed deathgiver.

Although if you wanna split hairs, Alien is *not* a horror movie. Sci-Fi Action flick.

As for 'The Thing'..ehh.. NO! Doesnt stand the test of time, IMO. I'd like to say most John Carpenter movies do.. but..they just dont. (Exception for BT in little China) But Starman, Escape from *...nay, but I'd give you guys "Halloween".

Sue me, but if a movie is even slightly based on reality.. that gives it scare value.

No offense to all the nutcases out there that like 'em.. but what THE F!CK.. is so great about some guy in a hockey mask that you kill over and over? Or some scar-faced guy with knife-fingers that wants you to sleep? I'd rather watch Scream than those so-called 'Classics'.

Not that im a big fan of jason, or any of the other old school killers (except leatherface, hes my idol) but those movies are all just good fun easy entertainment. Not all horrors need to have such deep plots or anything like that, just pointless blood and "jumpy" bits.

Plus, the time they were released they were original and not many movies like that were around at the time, so for many they enjoy them now for nostalic value.

what the fuck you lookin at?
I don't much get into the jason/freddy/halloween type movies anymore. But when I was a kid they scared the shit outta me!

Poltergeist is being remade.

I remember watching it on VHS when I was a kid. I was probably 5 or 6 years old at the time. (Parental supervision was a bit lacking in my family when it comes to media, although my dad and some uncles were watching it with me at the time, so you could consider that supervision...). I was just old enough to know what was happening.

Thing is, my grandparent's old house had this dead tree that sat in the middle of the backyard. Scared the crap out of me at night. I got even more screwed up with televisions... to this day, 20 years later, I still get spooked when the TV channel shows all static.

Damn it, sometimes I hate my family.

In my opinion, yes it does stand the test of time. Themes like isolation, paranoia, and the complete unknown are universal. That movie does such a great job of isolating, then shocking, then creating distrust and paranoia. By the end of it, you're confused, scared, and don't trust any of the characters. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter kept saying the DVDs commentary track that they wanted so bad to have it turn out that Russell's character was actually the thing, but Universal kept saying no.

You have to understand, what that sub-genre has become is laughably bad, more often poking fun at itself in some desperate attempt to stay relevant. When that wasn't in vogue- Al Hitchcock's movie "Psycho" comes to mind- it really worked well. Psycho was more thriller than slasher, but it definitely paved the way for Tobe Hooper's gritty, documentary-style slash 'em up- Texas Chainsaw Massacre. No amount of money, thin, good-lookin' kids, or super high dollar FX can replace the dreadful, wrenching feeling that came with watching TCM back in the 70s.

Thus, when that was still relatively fresh, Halloween and Friday the 13th blew the lid off of it, and everyone with a camera, a knife, and some friends started making those flicks. It became stale, while the kids moved on. Now, you just can't scare teenagers with those, but times have changed. A group of teens armed with cell phones, PDAs, laptops, and 30 years of slasher knowledge to go on just aren't scared by the same things that teens in the 70s and 80s were afraid of. You could say it was a much more innocent time.

Freddy Kreuger (The last of the GREAT slashers) came in later than the others, and I think he was the last original idea to come out of the sub-genre.

:2 cents: (or maybe a dollar)

Well, that reads as an honest review. And rightly so, the times are different and the test of time isnt multiple choice, its an essay and explain your answer!

I lived with a horror fanatic, once..all the time it was different slashers, low budget remakes or B-movie homage-payers. Thrillers and sequel after sequel... and after a while, you realize they're all truly lacking in the intelligence. Picking apart a movie takes some of the fluff out, but being laughable from the get-go? Pulling the story in some whacky new direction? They dont seem worthy of all that much praise, I think.

Hell, I've even BEEN in a fan movie. (Go figure, its been in post-production since 2005! I've yet to recieve my DVD!)

(Your resident Grudge fan, far right. Then scanning over to the left..an EX-GF of mine who never takes good pictures, Horror freak John C, Terence Muncy (BFP Head guy, no makeup) Dont remember the guy on the ground, and Tonya T, John C's GF and she ate an arm in HwtE)
"Hell Walks the Earth"

I suppose if I had to cubbyhole myself, I'd prefer zombie horror. Vampire flicks have taken off in an artsy direction since Interview with the vampire, courtesy of Anne Rice. So they arent.. that.. scary. But Romero has been doing his duty for years! Each movie he's made knows exactly what it's aiming for.

Thats just my opinion, tho..

My favourite is The Devils Rejects. It's way better than House of 1000 Corpses, which i still really like for the setting up of the great characters, and a few nice scenes. A very close second is Romero's 'Dead' films. I Love Zombies.
