Hey, What's Your Favorite Herb/Spice?

:shy: :D

I don't use much salt at all - a bit on a bbq'd steak though!

There's already enough (often too much) sodium in many foods ... :dunno:

If you buy good ingredients, and non-processed food, it doesn't come salted, and it allows you to control the sodium content.

I don't disagree at all Dirk. I was referring more to the instances (perhaps more frequently than desirable) when people are out and about, eating on the run, in restaurants etc.

I think you mean, I'd love to jerk a good Jamaican.

I'm funny. Also, what is Chinese 5 spice? Yes I could use Google, but I'm asking you.

There are a few regional variations in the included spices, but the one that is most commonly sold here in North America contains star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and ground fennel seeds. It's great in stir fry - gives it some kick and very interesting flavour. It's also used a lot on fatty meats - duck and chicken, for example. If you're cooking a duck, use this. You'll be happy. Also good in anything with ground beef. Also good as a dry rub on pork and some sea food. Go to the grocery store, look for it, try it with your vegan lady in a stir fry. You'll get lucky.

Fair point. If you're really worried about sodium when eating out, there are salad options, and you should always ask for your meats to be lightly seasoned.

i use chinese five spice in my house. i make a killer peking style roast duck. its amazing.

my pantry has a lot of unusual things, including sichuan peppercorn themselves. that shit was illegal and still is in some part of the country, i believe.

I'd hate to be that guy, but does garlic even count? Isn't it a vegetable? That's like saying onion is my favourite spice.
