There are a few regional variations in the included spices, but the one that is most commonly sold here in North America contains star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and ground fennel seeds. It's great in stir fry - gives it some kick and very interesting flavour. It's also used a lot on fatty meats - duck and chicken, for example. If you're cooking a duck, use this. You'll be happy. Also good in anything with ground beef. Also good as a dry rub on pork and some sea food. Go to the grocery store, look for it, try it with your vegan lady in a stir fry. You'll get lucky.
I don't disagree at all Dirk. I was referring more to the instances (perhaps more frequently than desirable) when people are out and about, eating on the run, in restaurants etc.
Fair point. If you're really worried about sodium when eating out, there are salad options, and you should always ask for your meats to be lightly seasoned.
