I've got a bug in my system that I can't get rid of. It is making my computer run slow on start up, and is not allowing me to get to my homepage on internet explorer.

I've run a full scan with AVG and it said my system is fine.

format your hard drive. you'll need:
- the drivers of your chipset, video, audio, etc. usually the manufacturer give you that.
- windows copy / linux distribution
- some patience

if you like, i could walk you trough

Have you tried if your OS has it the "restore" to a prior configuration?

You could also be infected with spy/adware.

Try a spybot search and see what comes up?

If you haven't backed up your data, reformatting is the last option you want to undertake (a painful but sometimes necessary lesson to learn!). If you are running Windows, try just cleaning up your disk first. Lots of times, your comp can get bogged down with temp files and stuff that should be deleted every so often. Click "start", ""all programs", "accessories", "system tools" and run "disk cleanup". Reboot and see if things improve. If that doesn't work, you can restore your registry to a prior state as FOMM said. Use "help and support" under the start menu to learn how.

This just all of a sudden happened yesterday while I was using AVG. I was running a scan, and after the scan was complete I selected 'remove all unhealed infections'. A window popped up telling me that doing this can cause system to crash. I still went ahead and right away my system started running weird.

My advice, as an IT professional with over 20 years of experience, training and certification?? Get professional advice, not your brother-in-law or your buddy who's a "wiz" with this stuff. No offence to all, but asking for technical advice here is simply asking for trouble. Unless you are very familiar and somewhat skilled with your PC and it's OS, I'd spend a few bucks and get it in to someone who can see the problem and evaluate what needs to be done. Formatting the disk is the WORST piece of advice you can get. Spyware, malware and trojans can have even an experienced guy spinning for hours. These things get into rootkits and registries as well as simple file infection. There is an arsenal of tools you can use to clean your system, but unless you know what you are really doing, you will likely cause more harm than actually fix it.

None taken, but if he's like me money is tight and I don't now any IT's that work for free. :D

All he can hope for is that if he's infected it's something not as malicious as you described, heck it maybe his luck day and it may turn out to be a known bug that can be easily cleaned.

My :2 cents:

Thank you all for the help. I ran a scan with ad-aware 2008 (lavasoft.com) and it found and deleted bad files, but my computer is still not running right.

Looks like I'm going to have to get professional help. THIS SUCKS!!!

Trying to save a buck can sometimes cost more in the end. I am finding that these attacks are getting more complex all the time, and the days of simply running ad aware and problem fixed are gone. I work alot for free, simply because I can't stand my friends and family getting hosed by a big box outlet with a tech dept manned by recent grads of the 4 month power technical course. Coporations don't care about your data or your photos or movies. They worry about money, and unfortunately, a re-format is a quick, easy, mindless fix that has the guy out the door in no time $100+ poorer

This is your lucky day.... :angels: Try the following software and hopefully your troubles will be gone

1. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up - Choose SAFE MODE

2. Run CleanUp. CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders (cookies, index.dat etc) it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

3. Run a scan in HijackThis - Be very careful as this powerful little util will delete whatever you tell it to, so make sure you know what you are deleting!

4. Run Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

5. Install and run Eiwido (more commonly known as AVG)

6. And finally bury that thing and do a scan with Stinger

Run all of these utilities one after another! This may sound excessive, but trust me, it's not.

Good Luck and be careful, if you are uncomfortable trying these, then you'll need to find someone you can trust that can.

"Crap Cleaner" is a good program for getting rid of Temp files etc.
Just Google "Crap Cleaner".
