Help me remember something please.

a few years ago, maybe 2004,2005 I remember Al qaeda or somebody had a US soldier they captured on video tape, guns to the head, making say things.
the guy was pretty brave looking, he actually looked pissed off.
it was around the time they were ********* people live on camera.

but a few days later he escaped.
he actually escaped one night but returned because he didnt cover enough ground.
then on the following night he escaped again for good.

anybody remember this story or the soldiers name?
its been bugging me for some time.
