Closest I got was a demotion. Basically the juvenile facility I worked at let it's administration get out of hand and they waited until the yearly check came up to try to get it in order. I was a newly promoted case manager so they let me take the blame (even though there was NO WAY I could have fixed it in the allotted time) so they could get an extension on it getting done. Now that I think about it, I think that's the only reason I was given the position.

"Your breasts, they are so large. You give Russian with them or entire Soviet Union job? What a country!"
Came close once when I was 18. I worked evenings in a supermarket whilst I was doing my A-levels. I knew I would be leaving the job in two months to go to University so my hard working ethic of the previous 2 years at the supermarket went downhill big style. I was told that if I hadn't left I would have been sacked. Like I could give a shit, I was off anyway!
After graduating getting a serious job etc, I have been head hunted three times so can't be that bad.

Never been fired. Learned the tricks in university and been in control ever since. Now my employer cannot afford to let me know because of the huge severance pay.
Certainly. To keep things short:
1. Find a way to differentiate yourself from others who can do the same job. This might be learning another skill and/or language, etc... This helps you establish a niche market for yourself.
2. Never depend on 1 source of income.
3. Learn how to negotiate.
I've never been fired, but I have to wonder if I wasn't set up to fail a couple of times, and then still manage to pull my job off despite that leaving my employer baffled.
