Hatchet-wielding intruder gets dropped

An Indiana homeowner woke up Monday morning to find a hatchet-wielding intruder in his home. Not exactly the most pleasant way to start your day.

However, the homeowner, who hasn’t been identified, was ready to exercise his Second Amendment right and defend his life. After being woken up by the sound of an intruder breaking in, the man retrieved his firearm and confronted the intruder.

WSJV-TV reports the intruder arrived on a moped before he shattered the back window and broke into a residence in LaPorte County, Ind., Monday morning armed with a hatchet.

Following a tense confrontation, the homeowner opened fire and fatally shot the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Jason Rabe. The suspect died at 9:15 a.m. of a gunshot wound to the upper left chest, according to LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan.

The homeowner appeared to have the support of the local community.

“If someone is in [your] house, you have the second amendment right for a reason – to use it. Might as well,” local resident Michael Clizbe told WSJV-TV.

Others, like resident Steven O’Donnell, said the break-in worries him. “Definitely going to lock my doors every night,” he said.

While Rabe’s death has been ruled a homicide, LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer said he doesn’t expect charges to be filed against the homeowner.

“I don’t anticipate there would by any charges whatsoever,” he told the LaPorte County News.

The homeowner was reportedly “extremely upset” that he had to kill another man.

Now I understand why americans need guns : because you live in a country in wich psychopaths are at loose !!!
I mean, really, an hatchet-wielding intruder ? What kind of countries let people hang around with an hatchet ?!

Still, assault rifles are not necessary and shouldn't be legal for people.

Anyway, if hanging around with an hatchet was illegal you probably would't need guns...

At least you're starting to understand why. What are you going to do to make it illegal to hang around with a hatchet? Make hatchets illegal? That won't work. I've got a hatchet, and an axe, and a machete, and guns, but I've never used them to hurt anyone. It's already illegal to use any of those tools to harm other people. You don't criminalize objects, you prosecute people that use those objects to do violent acts.

Technically, breaking into someone's home is illegal.

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle or carbine typically firing ammunition with muzzle energies and sizes intermediate between those of handgun and more traditional high-powered rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are categorized between light machine guns, intended more for sustained automatic fire in a support role, and submachine guns, which fire a handgun cartridge rather than a rifle cartridge. Assault rifles are the standard small arms in most modern armed forces, having largely replaced or supplemented larger, more powerful rifles, such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and Tokarev SVT. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with very limited capacity fixed magazines are generally not considered assault rifles.

I'll stick to Wiki's description, thanks anyway.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Actually, an assault rifle, is any rifle you commit an assault with. You can swing a musket like a ball bat, and bust someones melon open...that's assault, and it was with a rifle. The term select fire refers to fully automatic weapons, and big old scary guns, all the clueless people want to ban, are generally thought of as military style rifles. At least that's my take on the whole thing. Of course I've said it to many times already...we have a Bill Of RIGHTS, not a bill of needs, and I doubt this home owner used an AK, or an AR. In fact, most criminals DON'T...less then 1% of crimes involving a firearm, involve a semi automatic rifle....but it makes the fucktards in Washington, and their supporters feel warm and fuzzy inside, when they get all self righteous.

It was a term they used to describe the "evil" black rifles that they used to help get the bill passed. The only weapon that was legitimately called a "assault rifle" was the STG44, which means Sturmgewehr 44 which translates to "assault rifle 44".

Excellent replies. Thanks.
