Have you ever had to hitchike before a long distance? If so I would be interested to know when and where annd why

I know where I live in Canada it is not legal to hichike on the main highways and freeways, but what about secondary highways and roads is it legal there?

What are your thoughts on picking up hitchikers? do you pick them up? do you just pick up guys or just girls?

I would be very hesitent to pick up a guy because they could be armed and dangerous. I would not pick up a female because they might be taking you to court for molestation or rape for the slightest touch

thank you for your input:D

are charges of rape the only reason you wouldnt pick up a female?

I've never hitchhiked long distances before, but I have taken "illegal taxis" to places in my city. It's called getting a hack, which is basically paying someone not licensed to be a cab driver to...well, be a cab driver. We don't do the thumb jerking hand motion, though. People here laugh when they see someone doing the traditional hitchhiker's hand motion. Here you extend the index finger like you're doing the "number 1" sign, point it in the direction you're going, and hinge the wrist so that your hand goes up and down fairly rapidly.

Hey Brody

I've hitchhiked hundreds of times totaling a few thousand miles, but most all of that was done in the 1970s when it was still fairly commonplace and pretty low risk. My longest hitchhike trips were from San Francisco to Seattle and from Portland to Philadelphia and back.

The world is so different now that I only rarely pick up hitchers...though I still do once in a great while.

I'll pick them up sometimes but never when I'm the only one in the car and I prefer them in the front seat than out of view.

However I have been quite nervous when I was in a mates combi and he picked up a guy from a town with a prison. Turned out to be a farm hand and only needed a lift about 30 kms.

Ops forgot, the safest way I've done it was a university billboard with a "Needs lift to" section, they seem to work fairly well.

I did it once when I was a dumbass kid and needed to get home from a party that was way out of town, but only 15 miles or so. I've picked up hitch hikers on occasion in Australia where it's legal and common, but it really depends on whether I feel like some company on the road or not.

All very good points BBB. You just don't know nowadays do you ? and that's sad and kind of unfair to the fair and decent minded people who genuinely need a lift.

I would of thought that a nut with a gun wouldn't really be too much of a concern up in TGWN, shows what I know :o

Rarely do I see hitch hikers around here anymore, throughout California.
If I do it's typically guys in their twenties with signs "LA" or "Bay Area", depending where you are in the state. Typically, distance hitchhikers sort of perch themselves on the side of a thoroughfare nearest a freeway / highway entrance. I believe that it's legal.

I've picked up many hitch hikers, over the years, on mountain roads that have overheated vehicles etc. Ones that are really stranded and don't have baggage (in the literal sense).

I know the feeling driving past some HHs (YOU DICK !!) but I must say that you must discriminate ! It is imperative ! You could get jacked . . . loose your vehicle, or worse !

That's a tough one leaving a woman on the side of the road ! You can thank the omnipresence of the legal profession for creating a more dangerous atmosphere for women, if for example, their car broke down out in the middle of nowhere, the keen minded shouldn't do it. IIRC - Even Calif. Highway Patrol male officer's have to call in women officers from their jurisdiction to handle those calls due to the possibility of false accusation. BS Huh ?

What a world we live in. :dunno:

Yeah....i did it once. Officer saw me sticking my thumb out, stop me and told me: "i'll take you to jail if i see that thumb stick up again" :wtf:

Mind you i was still a highschool kid and the motherfucker didn't even offer me a ride home :wtf:
What ever happen to "To Serve and Protect"

After 2 hrs of my journey, a stranger pulled up beside me and ask if i need a ride?
(this was on a highway and the speed limit was 55 mph...i didn't stick my thumb out BTW)
I was well aware of the possibility of being kidnapped i just followed my instinct and hopped in which saved me a good 10 mile walking.

Dropped me off @ the next highway intersection but i still had another 10 miles to go.
Not all strangers are bad....gotta' judge by instinct though
Lastly, i would like to say: Fuck The Police :thefinger

I was surprised that there is one state in all of the US that people would think that hitchhiking would be a dangerous proposition. But the folks out in Northpole, AK - No, not the geographic North Pole. But the actual town that is South of Fairbanks Alaska. That entire area is pretty hospitable when it comes to people in "walking distress". I think it has to do with things being remote, and community being small & spread apart. But I think the 2 big things that help are the fact that the place is pretty much "pro-military" and pro-guns!

My ex was an officer in the Air Force. I found out she was fucking around while she was in Iraq, while I was spending the winters out there. So, I walked out of the apartment we were living - left all the bills and the car unlocked with the keys in the ignition, 10 weeks before she got back. I was walking down Richardson Hwy - a chick who was working in Fairbanks at Fred Meyers offered me a lift to the airport. I took it, and she was cool the entire time - no psycho twitching or the paranoia hand on the cell's speed dial. I know I should have probably called a cab. But when I found out about my ex, I was so pissed I just wanted to get the hell out of dodge!

Moral of the story, I think hitchhiking in Alaska is pretty much ok  , when you are in the northern interior. Don't quote me on Anchorage...that is further South and kinda iffy.

This reminds me of my favorite sexual escapade of all time. I was in college at the time. I was about to pull out of my friends apartment complex with my buddy sitting shotgun and this chick walking down the street almost runs into my car. She comes to the window and asks for a ride. She said she was at some frat house and things got weird and awkward so she left, drunk of course. She was pretty hot so I dropped my friend off first who was out of the way and went to her place. I made a quick move and was making out with her in the car. We went inside and I ended up banging her 3 times, dropping her off at class the next morning, and never talked to her again.

I've actually heard that before.

It's nice to know there's somewhere with a sense of community.

Yes as even riding in a taxi is hitchhiking. So everytime I flag one down I'm hitchhiking.

A. I flag it down.
B. I'm riding in a car that isn't mine.
C. I don't know the driver.
D. He's taking me to a destination.

Which is what happens when you hitchhike.

No, I've never hitchhiked in my life.

I have picked up one hitchhiker though. It was about a year ago. I was on my way home from work. I already had stopped the car since a truck was blocking the road while backing into a driveway. She just ran up to my car and asked for a ride. It was an industrial area and it was getting dark, so I let her in. Long story short, she had me stop so she could buy some weed (I can't believe I actually waited for her). Then she starts acting all touchy feely, which I really didn't expect. I told her "No, I have a fiancee" but she wouldn't lay off. She said, "My parents aren't gonna be home for awhile so we can do whatever we want". She was kind of attractive and seemed to be of legal age, but I wasn't about to cheat on Becks. So, I passed up the "free lunch" and eventually dropped the girl off at her house. She reached in her pocket, and gave me a handful of quarters for helping her out. I rode off wondering if I had just dodged several bullets.

Sorry for the double post.

I just remembered something. I did once "kind of" hitchhike.

My car had broken down from a wet engine (hitting a large puddle) on an urban freeway here in NJ. There was no shoulder on either side (typical NJ) so I had to leave my car in the slow lane with the flashers on. It was a terribly windy, rainy night about 10PM. A motorist pulled over and offered to drive me to a phone off the next exit. I went with him. After I got out, I actually found a policeman before I found a phone. He called for a tow truck. Then I walked the two miles back to my car. By that time a police car from the neighboring town had pulled behind me and set up flares. I got in the car and tried the engine and it worked! I got off the highway and took local roads home and made it safely.

So that's the closest I ever came to hitchhiking.:dunno:

I Hitchhiked once when I was 18 my car broke down and I hitched to a gas station a guy pick me and gave me a ride to the gas station.

But I have pick people up before and had no problems and I don't know if I would pick anyone up theses days to risky to me.

I actually did it last year in australia, it wasn't that long a trip though. Basically where i was staying was about 20minutes from the city center, but i had no idea which direction to go, so about 2minutes into my trip i saw i guy parked up on the sidewalk and asked him, and he said he was going that way and offered me a lift, so i said yes.

I never thought about it at the time, but afterwards i was like " maybe that wasn't a good idea ".

nothing happened though.

Darn I wish it was legal here.

I have hitchiked a few times, once on a dare and once when my dad left the keys in the car, and another time when I forgot my bus pass at home
