Happy 75th Birthday...

Seventy five years ago today, a woman named Gladys gave birth to twin boys. One was stillborn, and the other one survived. He grew up and became the greatest influence in music history.

By combining gospel, country, and rhythm and blues, rock and roll was born and it changed the world. There were some doing it before him, and many doing it after him, but no one will ever contribute as much as...

Without him, rock and roll probably does not make it into the limelight...or at least does not as soon as it does.

My personal favorite song by Elvis and the way he shook the culture up with his performance on Steve Allen doing Hound dog and the outcry he was being too sexual was awesome.

Elvis is King, fried banana and peanut Butter sandwiches for everyone.

While I don't dispute that his music was good and important, I think the man as a cultural icon is really what makes Elvis important and keeps people talking about him even so long after he has been dead. He visibly represented the counter cultural revolution which grew from the 50s corporate mindset in America. Both the conformist attitude and the need/desire for a counter cultural revolution was heightened by McCarthyism and the cold war.

Elvis stepped out with longer hair, performing music that was sexually and racially charged. The man's impact on culture was enormous and tremendously important. His music was moderately good, but not all that original if you look at his contemporaries.

(I know that last statement will get me flamed by many people, but it is true.)

He was pretty much before my time as he died when I was five. But his music lives on and was awesome. And normally I hate impersonators, most of them suck. But I saw one (Cody Slaughter) last year in Sevierville, TN at a place called "the Tennessee Shindig" that could have been his identical twin in the 50's. Sung and danced just like Elvis too.
