Hal Jordan is a Red Lantern.

Once on Ysmault, Hal, Walker and Warth discover Sinestro, but are ambushed by the Red Lanterns. Jordan is captured and Atrocitus allows Laira to **** him, but the former Green Lantern resists and is able to plead for help. After rescuing Sinestro, the Blue Lanterns begin to leave, but Jordan wants to go back for Laira. It is then learned that removing a Red Lantern ring will **** its owner. Sinestro then ***** Laira to save Jordan. In a burst of outrage, Jordan prepares to carry out Sinestro's death sentence himself, against the wishes of the Blue Lanterns. The rage that Jordan feels draws Laira's red ring to him, converting Jordan into a Red Lantern, though the last panel shows Jordan wearing both a red and green ring.

The Guardians' Book of Oa contains a prophecy called "The Blackest Night" which states:

A face of metal and flesh shall speak of the secrets of the 52. Fear will rise. Willpower will gather. And a wave of light will unleash the truth behind the power of the ring.
The Guardians refer to it as the last and hidden chapter of the Book, describing their final fate and ultimate purpose because they did the forbidden - they felt fear. The meaning, or truth, of this prophecy remains to be seen.
Ganthet called the Sinstro Corps invasion of Earth the second verse of the hidden chapter, with the Blackest Night being the third and final verse. Abin Sur uncovered the prophecy and was forbidden to speak of it. Ganthet further stated that the Guardians did not know exactly what the Blackest Night was.

The Black Lantern Power Battery contains the body of the Anti-Monitor. It is not known whether the Anti-Monitor is still alive within the battery, however his power is the source of power for the Black Lantern Corps. The Black Lantern Power Rings that were sent out have the ability to re-animate the dead. These re-animated corpses make up the Black Lantern Corps.
