Juan Castro and Javy Valentin. End of story.
OK, seriously now.
Personally, I discount players before the color line was broken. Sorry, but the sport is not complete to me. If I do include those players, along with Ruth and Cobb, I am going to include Bell and Gibson.
As for the others:
Hank Aaron. One of the great pure hitters in baseball. I still consider him the all-time homer king.
Willie Mays. Not only could the guy hit, but he could field with the best of them.
Mickey Mantle. See above. Were it not for the injuries...
Ted Williams. Perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, though John Paciorek put up better lifetime hitting numbers.
Ken Griffey Jr. Yeah, I know, most of his years in Cincinnati were pretty rough. But during the decade of the 1990s, there was no one better. The guy could hit, run, and field with the best of them. "Griffey's coooooooooming around..."
Ernie Banks. Great hitter, excellent fielder, lousy ball clubs.
Pete Rose. Yeah. There, I said it. Pete Rose. The best utility man in all of baseball. The man was a dick, but...
Very close:
Jackie Robinson. I so much wish he could have played his entire career in major league baseball.
Ichiro. See above. The guy is a monster.
Albert Pujuls. Perhaps in a few years, he can make the other list.
My all time team:
1B: Ernie Banks.
2B: Joe Morgan
SS: Ripken (barely over ARod, but the steroids thing scares me)
3b: Schmidt
OF: Aaron
OF: Mays
OF: Griffey (I know, I have to center fielders. One of them can play right)
C: Bench
UTL: Rose
UTL: Clemente
UTL: Carew
UTL: Jackie Robinson
UTL: Ted Williams
UTL: Ted Williams
SP: Maddox
SP: Carlton
SP: Koufax
SP: Bob Gibson
SP: Pedro
RP: Rivera
RP: Marichal
RP: Schmoltz
RP: Fingers
RP: Hoffman
Closer: Sutter
OK, I know there are some problems with this. Way too many outfielders in utility rolls. Too many righties in the pen, as well. And, I have no backup for Bench. But, that is my list for now, until someone points out the obvious guys I have managed to pass over.
