Today's news on the Hill came in the form of some Democratic lawmakers coming up with the "brilliant" idea to create a "War Surtax" in order to pay for the latest money request from the Dubya Administration..in the form for another $80bil to fund "war activities" (and to pay Blackwater?).
Anyways...what is most appalling to me, as a Neo-Liberal, is that members of the Democratic party think this might be a successful strategy to "end the war." I assume they believe that their fellow Dems will all fall inline with any prospective bill with the word "tax" in it..and then...what then? Bush vetoes the bill and the Democrats burn up any cred they have when it comes to REALLY discuss taxes? Or was the plan to give the Republicans a nice, fat issue with which they can attempt to repair their credibility?
The Democrats either really don't want control of Washington or they have already been bought off by special interests.
I can't find the words to describe the idiocy of the Democrats who even thought this was a "smart way to outmaneuver Dubya"....When Nancy Pelosi tears up "the bill" once it reaches her podium...ya know..maybe it didn't have the political message you thought it would Democrats...
Can we trust the Democrats to take their power seriously, at this moment?
