The One and Only Big Daddy
I am convinced that if you were to ask 10 self proclaimed atheists their opinion about any christian sect of faiths, you will likely get a similar answer from each of the ten, something inflammatory, caustic or demeaning.

Now, if you ask 10 people that I know of who are christians about their opinion of atheists, they'd likely
A) shrug and not say a word
B) ask who the fuck really cares?
C) say, oh, you mean like that Michael Newdow extremist kook whose filing lawsuit after lawsuit to have anything christian or Godlike in nature removed from society including our currency ? That guy?
or D) ''Let's go drink some beer and see if we can't grab a piece of ass over at Tracy's place'', or maybe, ''let's put that big block in your '70 Camaro.''

You can hang around with the so called christians that I know for ages until you find out about their . . . ummm ''faith'' whereas with atheists you're gonna hear about their perspective on faith in relatively short order, why? they're generally activists.

I'm sorry Skyraider, I just thought I'd set the record straight that Christians aren't all biblethumpin' freaks. Hell, half of em don't even attend church. :D

To answer you question about gospel music . . . I'm for anything that has the capacity to create positive energy and make people cheerful

Wow! hell of an answer:thumbsup:

Ahhh....you just struck a nerve my good friend! :D

I'm no atheist (agnostic....Buddhist if forced to choose any single religion over the others as possibly having any reasonable chance of being "right") but, in general, the half you are speaking of are Christians just because:

1) That's what they were told to believe when they were kids
2) That's what all their friends and associates believe
3) It somehow makes them feel better about themselves
4) They really haven't given it much thought; they just accept it as a given

I know hundreds of "Christians" who fit this description. Most of them have no idea what is says in the Bible nor have they bothered to consider the possibility that Christianity might be a false faith or researched what other religions might actually be based upon.

If they had been brought up being taught to worship the tooth fairy and everyone else they knew believed the same way, these people would just go with the flow without giving it a second thought and there would doubtless be temples dedicated to Tinkerbell all over the place. Because of that, I have a lot more respect for the integrity of the "Biblethumpers" as you call them since they are usually at least very well educated about the Bible (Will E....back me up on this!) and are emotionally committed to the faith in a much more intrinsic and genuine way than are the casual "Christians" to whom you refer.

That said, I would also go on record as saying that I am certain that there are some very faithful, devoted and intrinsically motivated Christians who, for whatever reason, do not choose to practice their religion in any organized church setting. I just don't know any of them.

Sorry, Sky....didn't mean to hijack your thread. I just couldn't resist Facetious' comment.

Now back to the thread....:D

Being an atheist, I overhear the lyrics and enjoy the music. Mahalia Jackson has a special significance because she successfully hijacked the religious songs for a worldly (good!) cause.

Lost at Birth
honestly i don't know a whole lot about it 'cept what i remember from the movies. like this from "The Ladykillers". starts out slow but then they set the roof on fire. but there's no arguing the huge influence its had on pop/R&B/soul even today. lots of soul singers started out in gospel. i'm not religious but i can certainly appreciate good music.

I love it. I swear to God.:angels:

Like others have said, I'm not a fan, but I can appreciate it and the talent behind it. I suppose I could be a big fan if I believed in Christianity.

There are limits of what can be said in this music and for that, I'll stick with my music of freedom. Also, I would've never gone to church if it didn't have music and for that I realised that church is just a concert used to get more people in the door. It's quite repetative too.
