Goodbye Sony PSP!

As grateful as I am for the custom firmware aspect of the PSP, that killed it off big time in terms of actual games for it.

I'm still content with mine though, just because CFW is awesome.

I used to have a PSP. In fact I bought it the day it was released but for two years I basically never played with it. Eventually I traded it in to Gamestop with a bunch of games to get credit so that I could buy a Zune. I use my Zune pretty much everyday.

I totally understand your motivation for selling it actually. You can probably get one for cheap now in comparison to when you first bought it, I've seen some fat unopened PSPs go for $45-80 on ebay

Kind of sad for Sony's first real attempt to challenge Nintendo in the portable department, but hey....at least it's not the N-Gage.

I have a PSP but rarely use it. The idea behind it is cool but it is all so expensive and the games load so slow even on the new one.

I watch a few videos on the go and a little music, but with it being worth so much I am usually worried about takeing it anywhere and it getting broken.

the PSP is not dead. in fact, it often beats Nintendo Wii and DS in sales in Japan.

Last month it almost sold 1/2 a milltion in the USA alone, beating PS2 and PS3 sale figures.

so no, i wouldn't say the PSP is dead or going anywhere just yet.

imo, it's a way better handheld device than the Nintendo DS. better games, better graphics, and it just does so much more on the media side of things than the DS.

great portable media center, great handheld gaming system.

Yeah, but that's all because of Crisis Core, which is kind of surprising.

But, the DS still blows the PSP away in worldwide sales, and is still leading the PSP by a lot in Japan. Mostly because the DS has tons of fun games, while the PSP has maybe five. Notice how quiet it has been on the PSP front for the past few months. I'd say Sony has pushed it to the back burner so they can focus on the PS3.

"Whatever happened to the PSP? The device that Sony once touted as "the Walkman for the 21st century" is fast disappearing from popular consciousness, and if you believe the rumors circulating just three-and-a-half years after its launch, it's up for a major rethink in 2009."

That's obviously a very biased article. But to say the PSP has capabilities that the company has not fairly pursued is accurate. Personally, if I was in the market for a handheld, I'd go with the DS. Nintendo has always understood the psyche of gamers.

The article is a bit harsh, but they are right; the PSP still has untapped potential.

The PSP was waaay ahead of its time in 2005 and it still is.

to me it seems that sony just treated the psp like the unwanted freckled faced redheaded stepchild that only gets handmedowns and leftovers. if they put a little real time, effort, and money into it they might have something halfway worth someones time.

On the back of the new Wizard magazine they have a page advertisement.

So, if they are getting rid of the PSP, why are they still advertising it?

:dunno:

One aspect of the psp I never understood was the UMD, why spend £20 for a movie, no special features, just to watch on a 3 inch screen when even the blue ray of that movie is cheaper and can be watched on a full size tv without need for straining your damn eyes.

As posters mention, the psp may be the superiour console but the number of times ive seen people pass it over for the DS is obscene. The DS is a fun console with a great catalogue of games that appeals to every age and all genders. Yes the graphics arent top notch but its the same arguement for the xbox and ps3 vs the wii. People who want simple clean dirty fun choose the wii, people who are concerned about graphics and pushing the limits of their game technology choose the bigger guns out there.

The PSP could probably disapear from the market pretty much unnoticed. I dont know anyone who owns a psp or would even consider it, many if not all of my friends are serious gamers and they have no place for it.

The PSP may not be dead, but it being overwhelmingly outsold by the DS, especially in North America. The article you've cited is for a single month, and while it has some credibility, it fails to address the larger pattern.

the iphone will start to eat into DS and PSP sales

i wonder if sony can bounce back with the PSP2 though

You're right, and it already has, and I think that's mostly due to the fact that the phone has so many more capabilities.

yeah its obviously not dead and its not going to be dead anytime soon if it was sony wouldn't waste money making different limited edition alot of people call it cheap ploy to get people to buy it but it works and with their new psp (psp 3000) you have mic capabilities so you can talk to your friends online via psn and it frequently winning awards plus its considered the most under rated handheld system to date but it still some how beats the ever popular ds the psp is going to stay ahead in the race of handheld consoles until nintendo comes up with something new or if microsoft enters the handheld gaming world with their own which has been rumored for quite sometime

Here's something for you. The PSP has sold roughly 41 million units worldwide, according to Wikipedia in August. Roughly the same time (Spetember), the DS has sold 84 million.

The highest selling game for PSP is Monster Hunter, sold 2.55 million units. The highest selling game for DS is New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendogs has multiple versions and doesn't count), which sold roughly 15. Including games like Nintendogs and Pokemon, the DS has seventeen games that have sold more then Monster Hunter. Say what you will about the DS, but the sales speak for themselves.
