Goodbye from Harley

To his credit, Maxell has done it the right way, IMO. Rather than make a permanent decision to leave, he's taking a self-imposed break.

When a member asks to have his/her account closed, they have a time window in which to reconsider that request/decision. If they don't change their mind within that time window, the account is closed.

I don't understand why people don't just step back, why there's this melodrama of permanence. If they're no longer or not currently enjoying the board, they can walk away and check it out at a later date and see if perhaps they want to return. This "I quit" stuff is a bit extreme, IMO, but hey, whatever they feel the need to do is their decision. Maybe their wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, ****, job, sex life, or whatever have been sidelined by their time here, and if that's the case, I fully respect their decision(s) to re-prioritize their lives and leave. Even then, though, why ask for the account to be closed permanently? They can just walk away for a bit and enjoy the board when it does not conflict with their real life priorities.

Upon further reflection of these recent "close my account" requests, I've pondered over this idea... By asking to have their accounts permanently closed, aren't they (the account closure requests) really protests of something? Aren't they really saying (rather than taking a break and just taking a sabbatical of sorts), "This place has become intolerable in my opinion," or "the members here suck," or "the rules suck," or aren't they basically just "flipping the bird" :)thefinger) to the board and its members as if to say, "I have better things to do than be here," or something to that effect?

I don't know. To make a decision to permanently close one's account seems to me to be sending some sort of a message. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but that's sort of how it seems to me upon further contemplation of the issue.

Anyway... Just a thought and my :2 cents:.

:hatsoff:

Seriously WTF is going on? Everytime I go to ***** or leave for more than 5 minutes somebody decides they can't take it anymore. WTF am I missing, what is untolerable about this place, the rules, the people? I fail to see what the hell is going on the make everyone go crazy as of lately. Whatever happened to having fun on a board?

Your guess is as good as mine, DB. I know Harley was really pissed off that his wrestling thread was moved to the games area and that he lost a ton of postcount by that move, and mcrocket had his own reasons for leaving, but :wtf: If postcount and rep mean THAT much, then perhaps people SHOULD reconsider why they're here. I don't know. I certainly would never close my account over rules or post count or rep issues, unless the rules became utterly oppressive, which they AREN'T here. :2 cents: It's just unfortunate that these members made the choices they've made, IMO. Still, we should respect their decisions.

Oh well. Life goes on... :nanner:

i hardly new ye

The only two logical reasons I could come up with of why a member would want to close his account are.

1. Like Nightfly said, it is some sort of weird silent protest.

2. They want to stay away for other reasons but don't have the will power to do it by themselves. So they need to not be able to come back to resist their own temptation.

Those are the only scenarios that make sense to me.(or maybe the rare combination of both of them) I am sure I'm missing some though. :dunno:

Really I am surprised, and am going to take part of what other members have said, that I believe summary of my feelings.

As Civickiller says.... " Harley you are or were a great member .... hoped this is all an early april fool joke".

As Poggy says.... " This turns out to be one depressing experience ".

As Calm says.... " There are only a few members here that I will lose sincerely and you, my friend, it is definitively one of them. You were a great member and his contribution not soon will forget ".

Sincerely, I it am going to miss it you, when I needed his help or advice, it was always ready to do it, like the real friends do it. :(

I sent to you my best desires for you, in what you decide to do, wished also you to have all the success of the world, as you have had it here.

Farewell friend.

Adiós Amigo. :wave2:

Everybody I have a message from Harley to give to you all.He sent it me by email and asked me to post it.

It has been brought to my attention that my having my account closed is a rather big deal, wtf. Friends, I closed my account for personal reasons. Not for useless items like rep or post count, not for a single member or members, but for a rather long list of issues that I became tired of seeing and dealing with everyday. I know many of you LOVE this site, but after McRocket left, I re-evaluated my postion on the board, and realized that it doesn't mean that much to me any more. I can understand the somewhat, emotional attachments, that some of you have for the board, but obviously I did not feel that way. FreeOnes is a forum, plain and simple. I did not go off to to some life ending ordeal. I simply requested that my account be closed. Please respect the fact that I no longer wished to be able to be apart of the FO's community. I'm sure some will still not understand, but that's ok. Enjoy FO's and what it has to offer, but don't worry about me. I've never regretted a decision in my life, this is no different. ---Harley

Not that my opinion is of ANY consequence... I am but merely an acquaintence of Nightfly and I like to help with an ID here and there. As you can see... collecting posts and rep are not priorities for me.

I've seen this kind of thing before, and the attention is a little nauseating. That's the only reason someone creates a thread to announce they are leaving. If you truly didn't want it to be a big deal you would have simply closed your account and walked away - no drama, no swan song. But McRocket and AH wanted to stir the pot before leaving and that's why N-Fly's earlier conclusion is pretty accurate. The whole thing is a call for attention on the way out.

I have absolutely nothing against the two members in question - best of luck to them both - but don't try to pass off the narcissistic desire to be seen as a martyr as something more noble. It's revolting. If you want to leave, just go. I'll pass on the extra helping of melodrama.

I'm in shock!!! I just read his announcement and I can't believe it. I always liked AH and I'm gonna miss him being here. I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Good bye AH and hope to see you again somewhere, someday.
