German cars

i own a golf gti mk2 from 88' and a käfer from 74. love them both.

two vw's i really would like to get is a scirocco and the corrado

I only like the performance models of the merc & bmw..the M & AMG models..the run of the mill models are a waste. Nothing special about them. Might as well get a Toyota. Also alot of the parts on german cars are made in other countries...there not 100% german..

If I could buy a car right now...I'd look at the '82-'86 Porsche 911 market...pickup the best one I could find..maybe a red '86, 3.2L, and enjoy driving it and fixing it up a bit.

So where`s Ford? :)
By far the best value for money German brand.
And the best handling German cars this side of Porsche, top of the line BMWs and Audi RS4.Well,at least the new Mondeo and Focus are.And generally besides Porsche and BMW,Ford is the third German brand that puts lots of effort in making their cars fun to drive.
If only they would make RWD cars...

FYI,that Daimler-Chrysler merger had absoluttely no effect on Mercedes cars. They use Mercedes parts on Chrysler products, but there was no influence from Chrysler to Germany. At least anything that would have something to do with quality. After the merger Germans kicked most of the old Chrysler excecs out -or got rid of them by some more polite manner - and brought german staff in their place.Chrysler is a Mercedes` puppet, not the other way around.
Mercedes quality problems are entirely German issues, they didn`t come from Detroit :)

You obviously like Audi`s more than just a little, but IMO they are a bit dull cars.Except current RS4,which is awesome, lovely and would be mine if I could afford one...finally they have learned that in a 4wd performance car you are supposed to deliver more power to the rear wheels...took only about 25 years or so to figure that out...
Quattro this and Quattro that, but what does it matter if it handles like a front wheel drive car

Phaeton isn`t sold in America at the moment, but as far as I know,it`s still in production and they are actually planning to bring it back to US market.Or have I missed something? When did they stop making it?

Indeed, Fords generally outclass Audi ,BMW and definitely VW (which have an undeserved reputation) but try telling that to the general public. Both my sons have BMWs (I suspect largely because of image) and I have a Ford.Having driven all three I wouldn't spend my money on a German car.Would you believe the Mondeo is built in Belgium?
The Audi TT wins one prize though-the ugliest car ever made , even worse than the VW Beetle and that's saying something! Why produce a car that's a faithful reproduction of a woodlouse?

except that ford is american... i know hey do a lot of engineering in germany (the jaguar 8 cylinder engine is even built in the cologne factory, though i'm not sure how that will change now that jag has been sold to tata), but they still are an american company. all their cars over here (canada) are shit btw... outdated tech, boring styling, whatever-quality... their only saving grace is that you don't have to buy one.

Love the new Audi A5

BTW my VW turbo engine is having audi printed on it :)

Have you seen the S5, sweeet ride.

I work for Press/Media Department for a German auto maker and have driven an S5 and fell in love. Price point is actually decent for what you get. Audi has come up a lot over recent years.

We had a few R8's in our press pool for a while and they were wicked. Talk about attention, anywhere I went there was cameras and the like. Too bad I couldn't afford the payment on it.

I would never trade the Toyota Hilux for any german branded car. There is a reason why Toyota rules the desert of middle-east and the jungles of Liberia.

But of course. If I hade enough cash for a BMW 7 serie with armoured chassis and bullet-proof glass.... then I'd buy an Audi A8 by Centigon. Along with a pair of diplomatic plates :D

audi, the overpriced VW.

LOL, sorry bud, that's simply not true. I've had my S5 for a couple of weeks and it is SICK... there's not many non-supercars on the road right now that can run with her, and the quality is outstanding, the interior is the best out there, and it has tons of electronics and other goodies that make it the leading car in it's class IMHO.

The last thing ford created that doesnt make one puke is the mustang. and i mean the old one.

I really REALLY don't like VW's at all. BMW, Audi and Mercedes are fine though... Especially 3 series Bimmers, Audi's Group B Rally quattro's, and DTM Mercedes :D

I was talking about European Fords. The Focus and Mondeo are universally accepted as class leaders.

Not that there's a problem with German cars, it's just that the general public don't realise how good the other makers are.

I remember an episode in "Top Gear" when there were three cars being compared-a Mondeo, BMW and Audi.Jeremy Clarkson said the Ford was easily the best car of the three but he was wasting his breath saying so because the public had bought the myth of German superiority.

Are you comparing the Mondeo to a 335i or a Opel Vectra? Ford and GM make some very good cars, but sorry they are not in the league of a 3 Series BMW. The Focus is one of the best small cars, only the Euro model.

My son has a 3 series BMW and he is the first to admit that my Ford is a better car.Except for street cred which is why he buys BMWs.

check the older audi a8s, the older mercedes 560 sec and 560sel as well as the older 7 series from BMW of the 90's, they were the best german cars available.
