German cars

The pre 1997 mercedes were some of the highest quality built german cars. After the merger of Mercedes and Chrysler, the designs went ugly and the quality went poor. However Mercedes are extremely expensive cars to repair and the handling in wet condition is far to be that great.
The pre 2001 bmw were some of the best designed cars after that the designs went shitty. The x5, x3 and the 760i are ugly. Handling on very wet roads or in rainy conditions is not the best.
Audi is probably the one which succeeded to beat mercedes and bmw in the prestige segment with the introduction of the audi v8 in 1989 which was featuring a 4wd transmission, 6 speed and 4.2 v8 engine, the car itself was also a dtm and imsa champion. In 1995 audi developped the a8, the first car with an aluminium bodyshell, 4wd transmission and available with a w12 aluminium engine 5 years later. Audi has also made an interesting station wagon the rs2 which was fitted with a tiptronic speed gearbox and a powerful engine. Unfortunately the new audi designs are butt ugly but the quality is still here.
Volkswagen has always been a brand offering a good performance quality ratio I however find the new golf V and the new passat ugly. Too bad the phaeton isn't produced anymore because it was a great car. However a golf IV r32 or a golf III Vr6 are great cars.
Opel was making great cars in the 70's,80's and 90's but since the 00's, Opel makes very dull and boring cars. Opel produced the Omega lotus one of a hell of a car and the Senator one of the greatest luxury cars from opel. Opel was also involved in rallyes with the manta and the kadett.
German cars of yesterday were better built than the german cars of today.
I like german cars but even JD POWER rated mercedes and BMW inferior to Cadillac, just see the link http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v257/georges2/?action=view&current=caddyquality4.jpg and you will see what I am meaning.
I would rather buy a used cadillac than buying a mercedes or a bmw on which I know that repairs will cost me an arm and a leg.

Love the new Audi A5

BTW my VW turbo engine is having audi printed on it :)

I used to hate Mercedes, as they used to be ugly slow clunky looking piles of shit, but they've come around in the last few years and are damn nice now.

Hiya Legz.
I'm not sure which models you're referring to. I've always thought the SL models were among the best looking automobiles ever designed. Today's models just don't seem to have that uniqueness - they just kind of blend with other high end luxury cars.

The old Mercedes gullwings are some of my favorite cars. It's hard to beat their looks.

So where`s Ford? :)
By far the best value for money German brand.
And the best handling German cars this side of Porsche, top of the line BMWs and Audi RS4.Well,at least the new Mondeo and Focus are.And generally besides Porsche and BMW,Ford is the third German brand that puts lots of effort in making their cars fun to drive.
If only they would make RWD cars...

FYI,that Daimler-Chrysler merger had absoluttely no effect on Mercedes cars. They use Mercedes parts on Chrysler products, but there was no influence from Chrysler to Germany. At least anything that would have something to do with quality. After the merger Germans kicked most of the old Chrysler excecs out -or got rid of them by some more polite manner - and brought german staff in their place.Chrysler is a Mercedes` puppet, not the other way around.
Mercedes quality problems are entirely German issues, they didn`t come from Detroit :)

You obviously like Audi`s more than just a little, but IMO they are a bit dull cars.Except current RS4,which is awesome, lovely and would be mine if I could afford one...finally they have learned that in a 4wd performance car you are supposed to deliver more power to the rear wheels...took only about 25 years or so to figure that out...
Quattro this and Quattro that, but what does it matter if it handles like a front wheel drive car

Phaeton isn`t sold in America at the moment, but as far as I know,it`s still in production and they are actually planning to bring it back to US market.Or have I missed something? When did they stop making it?

I have several vehicles -

Among them are a 1990 VW Corrado
It's the first year, sort of a replacement, if you will, of the old Scirocco. This car is superb ! I have 265,ooo miles on that car. Everything, I have been able to R&R myself, including the two clutch overhauls, brakes, wheel bearings, CV joints, a remanufactured Supercharger (after 170,000 miles !!) . . . everything !!!! Fortunately, I have room for this car, cause it's been my baby since '92 Ha ha ! For the money, I don't think that there was a better handling (with some simple suspension mods, of course) better quality car built, for that time period.

I always wanted to get a '93 VW SLC Vr6 Corrado, but I had entertained other interests.

I also used to share an (IIRC) - 1980 BMW 320 ! Well built, but a slug !

The single, biggest piece of shit, in reference to German cars had to be me mums' 1973 Audi 100 LS.. When I was a young laddie, ours had broken down on 3 out of 5 trips to Lake Tahoe. The f-en thing didn't run (would quit !) when we'd approached the 6,000' elevation level. Junker !.

Audi has come along way since then :D

Love German cars, especially Audi R8. Saw first one in the flesh so to speak yesterday, looked so intimidating! Awesome looking motor.
Say no more!

However, and this is no offence at all to decent drivers owning BMW's who have even an ounce of respect for other road users but here in the uk there is a minority (emphasised on minority) of BMW drivers who think they own the road. I mean the men and women who think they can fit in to the smallest of gaps regardless of how close it is to causing an accident, think that indicators are their for their own benefit not yours, who nearly cause an accident and still give you the bird saying it was your fault, these arseholes who flash their lights at people making them get out of the way even though the person in the way is doing 100mph and always have a mobile glued to their ear.
I know there is a lot of bad drivers out there that own lots of different cars but I see this everyday. Anyone else been cut up or pissed off by a BMW driver lately?:mad:
As I said above, I am in no way saying that all german car owners drive like this, I used to have a BMW myself.

german engineering rules and i dont say that because i am german, i am irish. the germans have always made quality products. unfortunatly Mercedes has gone american (Chrysler). But BMW rules the 5 series are probably the best cars on the planet. And VW ido not think the germans want to talk about that they may claim its made in the emerald isle. But remember they also have Bugatti(beleive it or not it owned by VW Co.) As far as sports cars go, lets just say Porsche.

All make good looking cars w/ excellent performance, but the are not reliable and very expensive to fix....I would look into Lexus...I'm on the 3rd and I'll never drive any other brand.....

my 60HP VW Polo 1.4
goes 175km/h (108 mph)
I checked it out on the unlimited german highways
but its to embarrassing to tell you the time, the engine needed.

opel is not really all that german, the company has belonged to GM since the 1920's. bob lutz worked at opel during the 70's. i'm not sure how much of their development is shared with other GM subsidiaries, but the current saturn astra for example is really just a rebadged opel astra with a crappy engine.
