Carlin was the wordsmith. He could construct humor through his ability to objectively observe human behaviour and point out its inconsistancies and ridiculous extremes.

Richard Pryor was the great storyteller. His humor was human behaviour through personal experiences.

They are, in my opinion, the best two comedians ever. But I couldn't rank one above the other. That's like comparing La Pietà to the Mona Lisa.

Is somewhere outhere.
Richard Prior gets my vote only because if seen more stuff by Prior than Carlin. But I'm sure Carlin is great too :)

I am only familiar with Ricky Pryor's work. So I voted for him instead of Carlin.

Honestly, I can't be so quick to choose.

As pure comedic entertainers, I would have to say that it's a toss up.
I still chuckle at the thought of the Richard Pryor facial expression(s)
*the worried - spooked - cocaine eyed ones to be exact.

Carlin was impeccably cerebral in his writings, not so crazed, but more deliberate.

Ditto - I listened to Richard Pryor in my younger years either solo or with Red Foxx and while I've heard and seen a bit of George Carlin, to me Pryor will always be the man

Both were comedic geniuses. I have to go with Pryor because so much of what he said made me laugh initially. But once I realized the place where the story came from, it made me think... maybe even made me sad. Pryor could turn a tragedy into something hilarious. I give Carlin props on many levels too. But I think Pryor was unique in that way.

I have to say Richard Pryor. "Live in Concert" is easily the funniest thing produced by humanity. And to be honest, I've never really found George Carlin terribly funny.
