Back in the 80s and early 90s, MTV had this smart-assed, nerdy quiz show that became the inspiration for future things like the PC game You Don't Know Jack. It sucked, the host sucked, the "extras" sucked, and it was stupid. But, hey...you got to answer trivia questions. It was Remote Control.

There was a UK version of this too and it was better because it had Frank Sidebottom.

When the host said Popeye, the first thing that popped into my mind was Popeye's restaurant, then after a second I realized it was the Popeye cartoon and the answer was spinach.
When I was a kid, maybe 6 years old, I bought a can of Popeye brand spinach for 50 cents thinking that it would give me super strength. It tasted like crap, I spit it out and tossed the full can in the bin. :(
Then there was the time I got a superman costume (only a T-Shirt) for Halloween, but that's a story for another thread.

LeVar Burton was just named the last guest host for Jeopardy for this season. An outcry of fans of Alex Trebek just signed an online petition. Burton was very humbled for being considered. And thanked those fans on online posts on social media.

He joins Good Morning America anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, CNBC financial analyst David Faber and sportscaster Joe Buck. This last group will host for one week each, and Burton's episodes are scheduled to air July 26-30.

The grand prize for each round was $350. That's two months pay back in 1966, and it was enough for a family of four to live comfortably and save a bit too.

I recall reading that there aren't many "Western" game shows like Wheel of Fortune or Price is right in Japan where you can win lots of money just for random trivia or dumb luck. Reason being it seems unfair that these people get money just because they are lucky, or can get rich through minimal effort.

That's why you see crazy physical tasks on Japanese Game shows, because viewers want to see contestants EARN that money. If a viewer can watch a gameshow where the winner had to go through Geneva convention-level torture to win, and say "Ok, that person deserved the money"... that's a sign of a good Japanese game show!
