I was never in the military. But I've always been fascinated by military memorabilia - from ancient times to the present. So I have a "few" items that I've collected over the years. In a addition to a German M-40 helmet with SS markings, I have an SS dagger (a replica, while the helmet is real) and a P-38 with Swastika markings. When I was still getting to know my girlfriend's circle of friends, we had a little party at my house. One of her friends is a Jewish fellow and he took particular notice of the dagger and the helmet, as I was showing him some of the various things I have: everything from a Roman Praetorian helmet, a gladius, a pilum (spear), a pugio (dagger) to more modern firearms, knives, daggers, bayonets and helmets. The WWII era German items are a very small part of my collection, but that's what caught his attention (for obvious reasons, I guess :dunno

At that stage of our relationship, this fellow knew my girl a LOT better than I did. He'd worked with her for years and they were friends. So if he had a problem with me, I wouldn't have had a problem with him looking out for his friend. But what rubbed me the wrong way was that he apparently took her aside at some point and expressed a concern that I might be some sort of Nazi sympathizer... based on my (varied) military collection! Only after she told me that he did that did I realize why he kept asking me about my feelings on foreign policy, specifically my feelings about Israel. My answer and position on Israel is very simple and easy to understand (unless you're kind of thick): I support Israel's right to exist, but I am opposed to (radical) Zionism and I am FIRMLY opposed to the U.S. foreign policy which gives Israel a key to the U.S. Treasury.
And while I may have some bizarre beliefs, I have no use for National Socialism or fascism. So to suggest that I do, based on my fascination with military history, offends me, and if you're a guest in my home, you may be putting your health in jeopardy.
Long & short of it: people allow themselves to be too easily wound up by symbols. I personally see the Confederate flag as a symbol of rebellion against the Republic. And I continue to believe that the leaders of that rebellion should have
all been hanged or stripped of their citizenship rights forever. But hey, it's just a dying symbol of defeat, typically embraced by under-educated people, whose parents were probably cousins. But I don't suspect that everyone who has a Confederate flag is some sort of lowlife redneck, cousin humper.
