Hypersonic aircraft takes its 2nd (and final) test flight today

Today, the U.S. Military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will conduct the second-ever test flight of the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2, or HTV-2. What’s so special about the HTV-2? Maybe the fact that it can reach top speeds of around 13,000 MPH.

Aboard the HTV-2, you could fly from New York to Los Angeles in less than 12 minutes. A flight from London to Sydney would take you no more than an hour.

Except you won’t be flying on it anytime soon. The HTV-2 is an unmanned aircraft that while maneuverable, glides through the air. It is launched via rocket, which takes it up to the edge of space and drops it off for a hypersonic soar.

nope, it's eventually meant to deliver a missile anywhere in the world in an hour or less...but it failed

Civil aviation technology has always had it's origins in the defence sector in the US. The taxpayer has been covering the costs of high tech r&d for a long, long time.

Anyway, when I read things like this I can only hope the US goes brok sooner rather than later. Not because I want to see Americans suffer (not the decent ones at least) it's just that world peace seems to depend on it.

We will all one day be proud Chinese citizens!  :brick:

In a way we already are...all of our electronics and certain 'designer' fashions...are products of "Made in China".

I'm just waiting until they make a aircraft that can fly at warp speed.

I do believe that has already been attempted...but it never left 'experimental mark-up' phase. I understand that we are trying to 'do the next leap' in travel/space exploration; but damn not while we're in a 'recession-like state economy'; make the politicians fund it if they want it to happen...not us citizens who are fighting to at least make a decent living.

although, if our government collapsed, judging from the collapse of the ussr, a lot of our weaponry would become available to whoever had the most cash to offer...which could make the world a more violent place

Was the world at peace before there was a US? Quit fucking blaming a permanent situation on us. People would be killing people if white guys in funny hats had never washed ashore.

True, though the US government has already proliferated a lot of the worst weaponry to some of the most unstable regimes in the world so it's hard to imagine it could get any worse.

the ability for one country to destroy the entire world or at least attack any other country on the planet it wishes to within a short time frame is a relatively new development and as is evident from the article the OP posted it's an effort being led by one single nation- the US.

No other nation is capable of the force projection and destructive capability of America. Until other countries achieve that same capability- which seems unlikely- then it's delusional to suggest America isn't playing a disproportionate role in preventing world peace.

Oh bullshit. Read a history book sometime. Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, has ever gotten in the way of mans capacity to chop each other up. Take some of your handy, modern day rationalizations and explain WWI and WWII to me, please (including the part where we tried to stay the hell out of both). Explain the Korean War. Now....explain every empire from the dawn of time (Greek, Roman, Sassanid, Persian, Ottoman, etc.) Explain the purges of Stalin and Pol Pot.

There is nothing new under the sun. Anyone thinks that changing the US's position in anything is going to keep people from hacking each other to death is clearly delusional. Or would you like to blame Bosnia on us too? How about South African apartheid?
