"The problem of the burka is not a religious problem. This is an issue of a woman's freedom and dignity. This is not a religious symbol. It is a sign of subservience; it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burka is not welcome in France," Sarkozy told lawmakers.
This is the kind of Frog perspective I actually appreciate. I've seen driver's licenses in which the subject is wearing a buka. I saw a woman taking a driving exam in a burka and the first thought that sprang up was, "wherever she looks is one giant blind spot. How would someone pass the test this way?"
In 2004, the French parliament ****** legislation banning Muslim girls from wearing headscarves in state schools, prompting widespread Muslim protests. The law also ****** other conspicuous religious symbols including Sikh turbans, large Christian crucifixes and Jewish skull caps.
At least they're equal opportunity in their approach. I don't go around wearing a large cross on a chain or anything but I could see this as religious persecution no matter what brand of religion you happen to buy into.
