Former Oakland Raider Jack Tatum dies

^^ You apologize for something you did wrong, Jack did nothing wrong. It was a clean hit. :thefinger

Apologizing doesn’t fix anything. Jack often said of course he was sorry that Stingley got hurt, but it’s hypocritical to apologize for a clean hit.

This is the point everyone misses. Back in the days when they actually played football and the rules allowed a defensive player to hit (or even touch) and offensive player, that is all Jack ever did. None of those hits that we see in the highlight reels, including the one on Stingley, were illegal. When rule changes did come down, he played within those rules. Tatum was one of the greatest safeties to ever play the game and was villainized just because he hit hard and scared the shit out of every receiver.

Totally agree. I wonder if this fact is what keeps him out of the hall of fame. Even Ronnie Lott, whom some consider the best safety to have ever lived, said that Jack should be in the Hall. Jack is, after all, who Ronnie idolized and was the man he tried to be like when he took on the position. If anyone was a dirty S.O.B. it was Jack Tatum's one time partner George Atkinson and his buddy Phil Villapiano. Just watch this highlight to see what I am talking about:

R.I.P. "Assassin" I personally revere players like Jack Tatum even though I was an offensive player and target of his type in my day. But the unapologetic ferocity of players like Tatum is to be appreciated IMO.

That said, the apology to Stingley would not be because he committed a wrong per se but because he contributed (even if fairly) to the demise of fellow player.

I had nothing to do with the play but I'm sorry it happened to anyone. That is all people expected from Tatum...a modicum of compassion for the circumstance. A respect for Karma if you will.:2 cents:
