Supreme Court rules human genes may not be patented

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Thursday that human genes cannot be patented, a decision that could shape the future of medical and genetic research and have profound effects on pharmaceuticals and agriculture.
Good thing, too. Gene patenting smacked of all sorts of sci-fi-dystopian future stuff.

Indeed. It makes sense that any alterations or synthesis that changes the original or creates a new strain should be patent protected, but the stuff we're born with? And the monopoly that they touted with having to use their laboratories, doctors, and facilities to do anything involving those genes? Outrageous. Such proprietorship wouldn't (or shouldn't) fly in the business industry, why should the medical industry think they're superior?
