Fellow Musicians - Do You Record Your Music?

So, I am getting back into playing guitar, I mentioned this before. A Squier Strat and a Fender Champ. I haven't yet recorded that, but in the 90ies, in our band, we used a cassette tape recorder that recorded on 4 tracks parallel, and allowed for individual altering, and adding tracks into one, so you could then add more.

Now, I use the Ssoftware "Audacity", it is Freeware, and very easy and you can add plug-ins like Autotune, etc.

Do you guys record your music, either alone or in bands? If so, what do you use?

Yes, I've been writing and recording my own music since the early 90s as well and play the keyboard myself.

All the music I write is electronic though, and produce dance music in various forms...Trance, Breakbeat, Techno, Drum & Bass and Electronica.

I started in the early 90s using an Amiga running Octamed V4 which used 8-bit samples and MIDI (I still do use it occasionally), but 17 years ago moved over to a PC running Cubase Elements which I use for most of my sequencing and recording now.

I also use Audacity for audio recording as well, particularly for samples in my music :)

My Hardware consists of:

  • [*]PC running Cubase Elements 9
    [*]Amiga 500 running Octamed 4
    [*]Korg X-50 Synth keyboard
    [*]Roland XP-30 Synth keyboard
    [*]Alesis Nanosynth
    [*]Soundcraft Signature 12 mixer
    [*]Focusrite Scarlet 2i4 interface
    [*]Cambridge Audio Amp
    [*]Philips CDR570 CD Burner
    [*]Acoustic Solutions DS100 speakers

The only experience I have recording music, involves an old 4 track like you've mentioned, and I only used 2 of them. At the time I was helping friends in a band, by being a roadie, or running lights. But we had a couple of sound guys, one of which I still see and ride with, and they did all of that stuff. I just helped a little, and got REALLY fucked up on LSD once, and made a 45min. song called, "Confessions of an acid head", which is basically me, and 3 synthesizers, and a piano. I still have it, but it's so old I'm afraid it will get munched down by my old cassette player.

Oh, this was like 38 years ago.

I have a ton of cassette tapes of my previous bands. We would use a tape recorder and stuck it under a cardboard box.

Now, I don't have quite the setup Freq has (loving the setup), but I use a Akai MPK mini MIDI and logic pro x with my iMac to make my own shit.

My actual writing is yet rather limited, I had some lyrics I wrote in a spirited mood, but couldn't come up with the music to it. A friend, who is an active musician, asked me if he could use the lyrics, he made quite a good song from it. It was rather moody, about seeing spiders, snakes, being lost on the island of your bed, miles from the door, and led to the last verse with padded rooms and needles etc. Dark shit.

My writing is always very driven by momentary flashes of inspiration, though I could try the method of many hip hop artists, or Jim Morrison, carry a notebook and pen around, and collect impressions, pieces of thought, and piece them together later.

I've got pages and pages of shitty poetry I've written over the years, but it's great food for collaboration. I can't play guitar for shit, but both of my nephews are pretty damn good and we've written a few songs together. I've been trying to figure out Caustic, but it may as well be calculus, I need someone to show me hands on.
