Favourite authors

I apologise if this thread has already been covered.

I'm an avid reader. I love books.
Anybody here have their "favourite" authors?

I read mostly non-fiction [specifically military history and/or other associated military works]. From the fiction line, my favourite authors are (in no particular order):

Tom Clancy
Richard Bach
Erich Maria Remarque
Robert A Heinlein
Clive Cussler
Joe Haldeman

So, what's yours? :)

Of those you have listed, I have only read books by Tom Clancy and Robert A. Heinlein. Just one book by each: Rainbow Six and Starship Troopers.

My own favorite author(as I'm a fan of fantasy books) is George R.R. Martin. I love his books, particularly his series A Song of Ice and Fire. Very nice and dark books, and I really like the way he portrays different characters as well as the scheming between the various warring factions of that world.

Another great fantasy author is Steven Erikson. His series A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen can be a bit confusing at times with an extreme amount of characters and other weird things appearing and disappearing all the time. It too isn't some happy fairytale, and there's a nice focus on military conflicts and combat.

I'm also a fan of horror books, and here I must definately mention H.P. Lovecraft. His stories are really something special. Sure, they take me forever to read because of his writing style and the lack of dialogue, but his creations are very interesting.

I love reading, but sometimes I just end up spending my time on so many other things, so I don't read quite as much now as I used to.

H.G. Wells
Edgar Allen Poe

I will take all these and raise you all the ghost writers that did the Nancy drew series of books. They were what stated me on the road to loving to read as a child. The whole set handed down from a great Aunt, opening a wonderful door for me. The love of reading. After I read them all several times, my mother gave them away because the smelled old. That original set would bring a pretty penny on EBay these days I'm sure. lmao

This is a bit of a look into my tastes too.

Ok in no order

Dan Brown
Terry Pratchet
Ben Elton
Sue Townsend

I like George Orwell for his negative eutopia books (my favorite genre. The only one that I've read that is supposedly in that genre is White Noise)

C.S. Lewis for the Narnia Chronicles and some of his philosophy stuff. I don't agree with alot of it, but the stuff I do agree with tends to help me understand my own beliefs better by making good arguments for it.

Donald Barthelme for his awesome writing style. Although I haven't read much of his poetry(just because it's poetry), it looks like E.E. Cummings has a similarly enjoyable writing style.

J.R.R Tolkien for the LotR books and The Hobbit.

Ohhh, a book thread:D

John Connolly - one my all time favourites. This guy just amazes me with each book. Looking forward to settling down with his new one later:D

Matthew Reilly - his books are non stop kick ass action. His books really are Die Hard on paper!

Orson Scott Card
R.A. Salvatore
Margaret Wies
Robert A. Heinlein
Michael A. Stackpole (sometimes)

Even those authors have created books that were duds at times.
