I'm going to really show my age here but the big thing for us when I was a kid was playing army (back then, parents would buy an absolute arsenal of play-weapons for their kids!). This was way before video games. If we weren't playing army, it was a pickup game of baseball, basketball or football.
Remember those "Pop Guns" about the size of a Daisy lever action bb gun ? We'd have wars with those things, the ammo was simply made available by thrusting the barrel into a freshly watered lawn, cock the action and blammo ! out comes a moist dirt plug !
Suckers would sting !
More fave pastimes as a kid :
Work on my "Wrist Rocket" slingshot trajectory / accuracy.
Have lemon, water balloon and / or Magnolia Bud wars.
For those of you familiar with the Magnolia tree buds, they'd end up on the ground under the trees, they sorta look like little
hand grenades, or so we imagined. Anyway, these buds have a stem that, when you snap it off you'd have to throw it before it exploded !
It was amazing how much fun that a kid can have with absolutely nothing other than a few trees to climb, a good sized pile of dirt, a shovel and some flat stones to skip across the moonlit lake. Did I grow up with some good amenities ? sure I did, but many times I recall leaving the amenities behind, only to find a new adventure in natures materials etc.
Oh, one more - We built this "micro dam" (dirt & logs) using rain water runoff - the sucker probably held about 2,000 gallons of water by storms' end
