Pearl Jam for their diversity and musicianship. They could do typical grunge/punky stuff like Spin the Black Circle, gentler songs like Betterman, and still pull off awesome covers of The Who (they recently did a tribute to them by playing Love Reign O'er Me and The Real Me for VH1 Rock Honors).

Eddie Vedder is one of my favourite rock vocalists of all time.

EDIT: Seems Freeones doesn't like my Dailymotion link... even though it was from the official VH1 account. :wtf:

In my opinion, Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, and The Pixies don't qualify as grunge. Certainly Pearl Jam & TOTD got lumped into that category due to their lineage and geography, but as for the SOUND of their actual music, I don't think they count. Pixies are just too unique, and even when they've really rocked hard, it's not actually in a grunge-like fashion.

I think Mudhoney set the standard and truly blazed the trail on a national basis. Of course, they were inspired by some others, but I think they defined grunge. They were also the best grunge band.

Nirvana was a great band, and much of what they did was grunge.

Alice in Chains and Soundgarden are somewhat overrated, and Stone Temple Pilots REALLY overrated.

I can't say I've ever even heard anything by Mad Season....

Alice In Chains. I saw them 2 years ago and they still kick ass! I wish I could have seen them with Layne though.

Soundgarden, by far. Alice In Chains comes second, but I always thought of their lyrics as pretty lame for the majority of their material, which is why they don't take the top spot.

Whilst I may like a few songs of a couple of these bands, I dont like them enough to pick a favourite.

I didnt get into the whole grunge "thing"

pearl jam by far, for me. though i would agree with the poster who commented that 'grunge' is really more of a label that was applied to them by the media. theyre still around, still writing excellent music, and theyre the best live show ive ever seen.

Nirvana, they invented the whole thing. If it wasn't for them no one would have ever heard about Pearl Jam or Soundgarden.

And, it doesn't hurt they are my favourite band, either....

Nirvana and Mudhoney were both pretty good grunge bands, but I would add the early Tad to the mix. The other bands were either hair metal bands in disguise(Alice in Chains, Soundgarden) or wannabes(Stone Temple Pilots) in my opinion(I lived in Portland during this period of music, so I saw most of these bands ascend and fall). The Pixies were their own phenomenon that influenced Nirvana specifically. Though they are not from the 90's, I would also add Green River to this list since they were the foundation for the music(Mudhoney and Pearl Jam come from the splintering of this band).

They're probably the least grunge of them all, but I voted Pearl Jam. I even think they're the best over all genres.

Nirvana are good, but vastly overrated.
