Facebook Is Becoming a Full-On Identification Service

Facebook's facial recognition software might not be so harmless. A recent study from Carnegie Mellon finds that the technology can help researchers locate people's social security numbers, just from the information on their Facebook profiles and their photo. When first released, Facebookers noted the inherent creepiness of facial recognition, but now that the tool can double as personal identification software, the technlogy is looking even more iffy. With this increased ability to ID its users, Facebook is slowly morphing from a social network to a possible identification service.

Facebook first released its facial recognition software last winter, sidestepping criticism by slowly rolling out the feature and allowing users to opt out of the service. But this study finds that the technology can be used in harmful ways. By mining Facebook profiles, the researchers could identify at least one personal interest of each subject and the first five digits of a social security number about 30 perecnt of the time. Sure, that's not a huge percentage, but it will only improve, lead researcher Alessandro Acquisti told Network World's Richard Power.

Not having an account on any of those sites is not enough. If you're serious about keeping the amount of information sent to those sites as a result of your browsing to an absolute minimum, you can use the RequestPolicy extension for Firefox to selectively prevent cross-site requests to any site you don't like. The best way is naturally to prevent any and all requests by default and then allow requests only for sites that you actually want to work. If you use it, remember to disable that default setting for allowing various different commonly-used sites, because facebook is included in those.

I don't expect that many people are willing to actually go through this trouble. It will break any site using cross-site requests until you configure the extension sufficiently.

If you look at the bottom of this page it has a link to facebook & twitter. Do people really post porn site forum blogs on fb & twitter?

Ummmmmmm, wouldn't just not putting an actual picture of yourself on your profile "kinda" defeat that problem?!?!? Just sayin'! Ha ha ha! My friends know what I look like.......so I have a Pittsburgh Penguins logo as my profile pic on Facebook! Good luck getting my SS# from that! Ha ha ha! :D

After watching the Social Network movie and the CNBC documentary on the privacy issue...I went on an FB strike.

The social network wasnt accurate^. On another note FB has serious issues with privacy and it would seem that they arent getting any better at it.

Facebook will become the biggest advertisement commercial seller ever. When I type something in a status update next thing I know I have four different ads on the side that just compared to status.

Example:

I watched ten minutes of Glee and it sucks. That is all.

I refresh page and on side two ads out of five states: Glee fan; enjoy Glee music...

o_O

Facebook makes us all slaves!

Dont post status updates because no one cares wtf you doing or watching. You're Welcome.

Facebook is and will always be a giant privacy violation. They sell personal information. That is their only product. They will not have any voluntary limitations on that. What's worse is that most people are fucking retardedly stupid and enter any and all information about themselves there, because they think that they have to follow everyone else who has a profile there like sheep and because they think it is "cool" to be there.

That will never be fixed until Facebook does something that will get them in such major legal trouble that the entire company goes bankrupt as a result. Not that it helps any in the long run, since then people will just look for the next largest available social networking site where they can piss away their privacy exactly in the same way as they previously did on FB.

Facebook is a secret government probe meant for people to willingly reveal themselves to their "friends" and the government just keeps watch. Mark Zuckerberg is really a CIA operative.

For the EMPEROR!!
Makes me glad I don't have Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or any other social networking site.

:dito: Me too. I never was interested in, or could be bothered about those Social sites.

Since we're prone to tossing around names despite meaning these days...why don't we just call those who use 'social media' "socialists".:)

:dunno::o

It must be a instrument of the new world order.

:yesyes: Obama uses twitter so I guess his antagonists were onto something when they were calling him a 'socialist'.
