EXCESSIVE commercials during NFL games

So I was on one of my sports team's forums last Sunday during the Queens game and I posted about how god damned difficult it is to sit down and watch a game when every other play there seems to be a damn commercial, and my comrade posted this (excerpt):

Unless Im at a bar with friends or stuck someplace like work I can barely sit thru a football game anymore because of this...

last season, i was out in NYC and my buddy & I went tot he Giants game. That night we were wrecked so we just stayed in and watched the Sunday night game. Just for fun, we used a stop watch & we recorded how much actual football was played (hike to whistle) vs. commercials & filler.

I kid you not, when all was said & done, in a 3 hour & 31 minute NFL football broadcast there was only 11 minutes & 42 seconds of football played... That's pathetic. I wish we would have recorded how much time commercials took up...

I pretty much have to DVR the game & FF the commercials to make it thru unless its the playoffs...
The overall amount to playing time was astonishing.

Doesn't anyone else here wanna puke here after seeing the 29th Bud Light commercial after a while, or what? Shit is a straight up racket.

BCT

Pucker Up Butter Cup.
I love it when you try to flip channels and all the games are on commercial at the same time.

L3ggy

Special Operations FOX-HOUND
I find that hilarious.

I find that hilarious.

Freaking couch potato fatasses in America are blasting Europeans over their love for European Football, all the while they are being essentially duped by brainwashing via barrage of commercials.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Queens, but by god I will not tolerate that shit. It just lowers that team on my hierarchy of my teams to watch list. They're basically in last place behind NHL, MLB, EPL and NBA, not to mention majors in pro golf and tennis.

As somebody who is in the TV business and has to broadcast football, maybe I can explain. The network has a certain amount of commercial breaks to get in, about 25. They can only take a break after a TD, FG, punt, timeout or injury/review. If nobody scores, sometimes they can't get them all in. So when somebody does score, they "double up" or run 2 commercials. That is, go to commercial after the PAT......then go to another commercial after the kickoff. It can be annoying, I know.

Also, in the case of the 4pm EST games, they can't run a commercial break until all of the early games are finished. If it goes to O.T., then they're stuck. I've actually seen the entire 1st quarter go by without a commercial. Then there are 12 breaks in the 2nd quarter.

Hope that helps. Don't we all feel smarter now? :)

So are you agreeing it's basically a hustle?

Just find a cable provider that offers NFL RedZone. No commercials, no breaks, just back and forth between all the games going on with a few highlights if all games are on commercial. I literally sit on the couch and don't have to move or change the channel from 10:00-4:30. It's the only way I can even watch football anymore, and it only costs something like $30-$40 for the entire season.

I'n not that big of a fan of this game, but your info is noted.

I pretty much watch the Queens and that's about it. I will watch MNF and SNF as well but those are games by themselves as well.

When I get to my folks' house though I might catch a Thursday night game (like tonight - Pack v. Bears) on the NFL Network.

I hate commercials. Every time a commercial comes on I hit the mute button. The mute button is getting worn out. The Nfl games that have been shown on primtime tv so far have not been that good either. The raiders- chargers game and the Packers- Bears game were both a waste of time .

I have a TIVO DVR. I record shows........ESPECIALLY SPORTS....and start watching them about an hour after it starts. Fast forward thru the commercials.

NFL is bad for commercials but NASCAR is absolutely the worst.

It's not the commercials that bother me as much as the complete lack of real action in an American football game. 15 seconds of play at most, followed by what seems like an eternity of huddling, time outs, reviews, etc. But what's even more bothersome than that to me is the way football announcers treat their audience as if they're morons. Yes, I see the wide receiver caught the ball, yes I know it was a great catch, uh-huh, I know that's a touchdown, yep, I know the offense just got penalized for holding because THE FUCKING REFEREE JUST TURNED ON HIS MICROPHONE AND TOLD ME. And frankly, I can do without some ex players "insight" into what's going on on the field. It's not rocket science, really. The dude got tackled, the dude caught a pass, the dude intercepted a pass. My favorite comment came from Dan Dierdorf a couple of weeks ago. "If the Ravens keep playing defense like this, it's going to be hard for the Texans to score." Wow, Dan, thanks for the brilliance.

And as for the commercials, that's why all US networks are reticent to air soccer. 45 minutes of action followed by another 45 minutes of action. Just the 15 minutes between to air the mindfuck commercials.
