European football: Someone please break all the leagues down for me

Even a rather tiny country like Austria has several football leagues with the "Bundesliga" being the top tier, and "Erste Liga" (if you speak German this could be quite confusing since "Erste Liga" is not the top tier) being the second highest league. From there on the leagues are divided and split into three according to geographics (pretty much like in all major US leagues). In our case there's Regionalliga West, Regionalliga Mitte (=Central) and Regionalliga Ost (=East). The fourth tier consists of nine divisions, one for each Austrian state. The fifth tier is called 2.Landesliga or Unterliga and let's just say from there on out it's even more divisions.

Of course it's exciting to watch Champions League play, even more so after those two amazing semi finals, or see which team wins its domestic league, but one of the cornerstones of football clearly is some of the teams's struggle against relegation and the fight for promotion in each league. If you would take that premise away, like already suggested by some overseas imbeciles who want to implement such a rule in English football (but will never succeed imo), you would clearly destroy the soul of The Beautiful Game.

Competition wise another big part of football is the idea of all the Cup competitions who can pin solely amateur teams from third, fourth, fifth or even lower tier leagues against the biggest teams in their respective country. For example last year's German Cup final was held between Bundesliga side Schalke 04 and MSV Duisburg, a team from the 2. Bundesliga.
