Hindi is the official language (one among 18 others) recognised by the government of the Indian Republic.

Hindu is a person who professes belief in Hinduism - often cited as one of the oldest religions and living traditions in the world.

But yes - Hinduism is a religion, not an ethnicity.
Hindi is a language, not an ethnicity (just like Hebrew is a language, not an ethnicity).
