Escape From New York? High-Taxing Empire State Loses 3.4 Million Residents in 10 Years

New York State accounted for the biggest migration exodus of any state in the nation between 2000 and 2010, with 3.4 million residents leaving over that period, according to the Tax Foundation.

Over that decade the state gained 2.1 million, so net migration amounted to 1.3 million, representing a loss of $45.6 billion in income.

Where are they escaping to? The Tax Foundation found that more than 600,000 New York residents moved to Florida over the decade – opting perhaps for the Sunshine State’s more lenient tax system – taking nearly $20 billion in adjusted growth income with them.

Who wants to live in New York anyway?

I sure as hell don't. I was born there, lived there, have family living there, and nothing other than being closer to my family is drawing me to going back. It may give me more in my check but they suck more out than it is worth.

Isn't that something like 'Learn from Snake Plisken' :)

Well, I do like living in a city, but New York is huge and the costs are pretty stiff

Oh, here is a crazy story on New York costs

It's natural to immediately think NYC when New York State is brought up. But there is a lot of back country to New York. I don't know what the tax realities are of being a hillbilly in New York, though.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Fuck NYC, but the whole state isn't bad. The country offers beautiful scenery, and GREAT fishing. However, their gun laws are unacceptable...basically treasonous, and they have a helmet law, so not for me.

Some of the best fishing in the country is in New York. Beautiful low rise mountains, finger lakes, diversity of culture, and a huge range of socio-economic situations to choose from. There are some amazing things in the state.

If you're talking the city, I can understand the huge exodus currently. With the state of unemployment, who can afford New York rent? Watch what happens when the economy turns around. New York city will grow again.

Anyone who bad-raps New York likely knows little or nothing about the city. It's the center of everything that is the USA....there's something intrinsically magical about it. If you've never been there, you should go and you'll know what I mean. If you have and still don't get it.....well, I don't know what to tell you except that you have no soul.

So diverse so full of everything. S I get that there's everything under the sun but the cities leaders have a longstanding tradition of corruption and the gun laws are about as unconstitutional as it gets. For god sake they jailed a man for 2 years for shooting himself in the leg???

Do you live there?

No but I have spent a lot of time there. It has its problems for sure but so does any big city. I understand not wanting to live there but then again I don't particularly care to live in Detroit either. To start a thread that singles New York out as somehow being a worse place than others is unfair and that was the point of my response. If there is a migration away from New York, I suspect it is based on economic factors more than anything.

NYC is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Why?

1. Too damn expensive. I had a cousin who had a six figure salary who lived there for a while and all he could afford was an apartment with a bedroom just big enough for his bed, and nothing else.
2. Taxes ^ Same as above, makes living there even more expensive.
3. Gun laws -- so i don't have the right to defend myself against (see below)
4. Rats. Not only the four legged variety (I hate rats) but the two legged variety. The four legged variety are EVERYWHERE and the two legged variety you can't shoot (unlike here in TX)

Other than that, I wouldn't mind spending maybe a weekend there, just as long as I don't see any rats otherwise I run out of the city screaming like a little girl.

John Rocker said it the best:

  • On ever playing for a New York team: "I would retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing."
  • On New York City itself: "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?"

  • In passing, he calls an overweight black teammate "a fat monkey." Asked if he feels any bond with New York Knicks guard Latrell Sprewell, notorious for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo two years ago, Rocker lets out a snarl of disgust. "That guy should've been arrested, and instead he's playing basketball," he says. "Why do you think that is? Do you think if he was Keith Van Horn -- if he was white -- they'd let him back? No way." Rocker is rarely tongue-tied when it comes to bashing those of a race or sexual orientation different from his. "I'm not a racist or prejudiced person," he says with apparent conviction. "But certain people bother me."

  • "So many dumb asses don't know how to drive in this town," he says, Billy Joel's New York State of Mind humming softly from the radio. "They turn from the wrong lane. They go 20 miles per hour. It makes me want -- Look! Look at this idiot! I guarantee you she's a Japanese woman." A beige Toyota is jerking from lane to lane. The woman at the wheel is white. "How bad are Asian women at driving?"

 to you Justaman. Well said.

Do you live there?
Well yes. I do. :) -- not the City but the suburbs on Long Island. :) I'm a native New Yorker. I've been here all my life.

Sure, we have our problems ... but all states are suffering in this bad economy.

Who wants to live in New York anyway?
Fuck New York. Dirty, nasty, corrupt asshole of this country.
And as for you zeeblofowl and Worm - I'm not gonna comment on all your negative attitude and stuff in here. And give you the satistisfaction. No way. :noway:

I'm not gonna sink to your level. I'll just leave it at that.

Tell me NY isn't a fucked up state. They don't care if you're standing on the corner smoking a joint (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/04/nyregion/cuomo-seeks-cut-in-stop-and-frisk-arrests.html) but be damned sure you don't get a 20 oz Coke at a theater.

Too late. You just did.

First you knock Chicago and now NYC. Yes people do want to live in big cities, not in small towns. There's a reason why they're small: no one wants to live there

I talked about New York and LA (California) first. :D

Small towns and rural areas are better.
