eReaders - Yay or Nay?

Can`t beat a good book.Although you can beat off over one.

I agree with you.

But the 1st post gives the direction of the thread. It is not whether paper-books are better or not, but whether to go for a e-reader or not instead of a PC.

Guess, the thread starter made a mistake in naming the thread. ;)

I like the concept of e-readers, but I guess I like real books too much to make the jump... not to mention I need another electronic device like I need another hole in my dick.

Half half.

The reason I'm looking into them is as a easier way of accessing the .pdfs during a game. I wanted to know people's general opinion of them that have them.

But, if they don't read .pdfs (though depending on the cost to convert them for kindle MAY be worth it, dunno yet) then it's all a moot point. I don't really want it to replace books...it's just an option I'm exploring rather than printing and binding over 200 .pdfs.

How does a kindle handle being dropped in the sand on the beach or the hard paving next to a swimming pool?

I had to use digital papers on my last job, partially because I could not phisically transport all the paperwork across the country on business trips. Plane trips would be a monster to pay, and the company would NEVER provide for that.

Plus the security of carrying around company papers and the chance of people getting a sneak peek forbids this.

Plus as you mention game handbooks, yyou can't beat the document search features over the having to thumb your way through some 400-page thing

So they hold up to 30000 books or something ridiculous... I've never needed more than one book at a time... :dunno:

I LIKE owning books anyway. When someone comes into my house, they like checking out what books I have and I like lending them out. You can't lend a kindle, unless you are mental.

But hey, that's just me.

I'm curious to know how people read differently in the different mediums. Personally, I read a lot faster on my laptop than on a Kindle or in a book. I also retain the information much better.

Don't get me wrong - I've done at least one Ph.D. in an historical field, and I've spent more than my fair share of time with books and paper documents. As I'm reading now, however, I just do it best on my laptop. There are so many things that are adjustable - font, font size, how much is on a screen at once, the format of what's on the screen, columns, and so forth. So I've found my optimal reading layout, and now I can put everything into said layout, and voila! I read faster and gooder.

But what do other people think? If you read a novel in book format, in Kindle format, and on your laptop, which would be most agreeable. I don't mean in terms of aesthetics - obviously the book is going to win. There are very few things more satisfying than getting cozy with a book. But if you're reading to retain, what works best for you?

And yes. A frickin' tree had to die for my sig. I'm a bloody paradox. I don't, however, have tentacles.

I have an iPad which works well with an eReader app or whathaveyou. And it can do so much more, I haven't touched my laptop or my PC since I got it
