eReaders - Yay or Nay?

So I'm getting to the point, as I have tons of PDFs of out of print gaming books, that trying to use them on my netbook is getting annoying. Getting a Kindle or another eReader is becoming an attractive option.

What's your opinion on them? Love yours? Don't bother? What kind do you have?

When it comes to reading, nothing's better than having the book in your hands and turning the pages...

If you're going to take the plunge, my advice is Kindle over any other. I've heard a lot about the interface issues with the Nook, and Sony's offering being essentially a higher prices Kindle.

nay.

I'm with Johan and Roald on this one. Paper is much better - it's just so much softer to wipe your arse with.

Seriously, I just prefer paper books. They are more tactile.

Kindle.

Down with paper. I'd love to eliminate paper from my life.

So a tree had to die in order to make your sig? Good double standard! :cthulhu:

Honestly, I'd rather have the books. However these particular books are hard to get a hold of since they're out of print. I think the last one I saw was around $56 + $36 for S&H to the NL. That's just one of them...I'd love to have my bookshelf filled with these books but it's not happening anytime soon.

Much easier to get the .pdfs since the publisher released them to a .pdf store.

Fair point, unless you want to just print them out and bind them yourself.

I remember printing out an X-COM: Terror From The Deep guide for the PS1 which took ages, my sole goal in life is to complete that game before I die :angels:

Although I've always preferred books, I've been thinking about getting a Kindle. My sister has one and she thinks it's great. ... Sorry Petra, don't know enough about them to give you any advice.

I'm an avid reader of books. Paper of-coarse and please don't give that line about tree-cutting etc. Restrained cutting keeps up the environment and does not destroy it. Start walking without getting on to your car, if you are so concerned.

Any way back to your point. I have a small 8" atom based computer with Y-book and comical, both are e-book readers. Both free soft wares.

Now from the experts:

But the Kindle is NOT the ebook reader for me for one HUGE reason and a couple of smaller ones too.

The main reason I am not buying a Kindle for my ebook reader is because 90% of all the ebooks that I already own, and I own hundreds of them, are in PDF format, and the Kindle does not read PDF ebooks.

Hmm...if eReaders don't do .pdf then it's kind of a pointless thing to look into them. ;-)

I'll have to look into the software that rotates stuff on the screen. Not sure if that is anymore useful than what I already have set up...but worth a try due to the lack of player guides at the table.

I'd opt for a 14" laptop. I bought a used emachines 14" for $199. Can't beat it for the price.
-1.6 Ghz AMD -2 GB ram -140 GB HD running Win Vista basic. Full performance PC runs games, PDF, word processing, even runs Adobe CS 5 premium without a problem, and is light and portable. I could add another 2 gb of ram for about sixty bucks and have a system on par with the gateway my current g/f paid nearly $2k for.
