When you're making a post, instead of hitting quick reply, hit Go Advanced. All your emoticons will be on your right.

guitarnnblack, enlarge the image on the Right hand side of the text box there are the emoticons. This is the standard view of the text box when you click on "Reply to the thread" button.

Below the box, under "Miscellaneous Options" there are three buttons.

1. Show your signature

2. Automatically parse links in text

3. Disable smilies in text

Each having a box in front of it. Ensure that the third one is not selected and 2nd one is selected, as shown on the image.
