Eliminating $1 Bills Could Save Billions

Washington has come down with a case of fiscal fever as the Obama administration proposes everything from spending freezes on domestic programs to selling off unused government property to bring the budget back in line. Now, one study argues that the government can save billions of dollars simply by making a change to the currency itself.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Government Accountability Office issued a formal proposal to the Treasury and Federal Reserve noting that if it eliminated the $1 bill and replaced it with the $1 coin, the country could save roughly $5.5 billion during the next 30 years. The reason, according to the agency's report, is that dollar bills have a shorter lifespan than dollar coins because they wear much faster, which in turn requires the government to spend more to print new bills.

The GAO estimates that phasing out dollar bills in favor of coins would require a four-year transition period, during which the government invests in the new currency, but following that, the government would save an expected $522 million each year from the change.

Unfortunately, as the GAO notes, there is one problem with the plan: When given a choice between dollar coins and dollar bills, Americans always choose bills.

"GAO has noted in past reports that efforts to increase the circulation and public acceptance of the $1 coin have not succeeded, in part, because the $1 note has remained in circulation," the agency wrote in its report. So if we are ever going to make the switch to dollar coins, as other countries like Canada have done, the GAO suggests the only way to do so is to phase dollar bills out of circulation altogether.

Before you start hoarding your dollar bills though, keep in mind that the GAO has made similar proposals four times during the past two decades, and obviously dollar bills are still in circulation. The only difference this time is that the overall climate in Washington is more geared toward budget cutbacks now, but given that it would take several years for the savings to kick in, this seems unlikely as well.

Still, we'd like to pose the question to readers. Would you be willing to eliminate dollar bills and switch to coins if it meant improving the country's balance sheet?

We already made 2 attempts to change from a paper dollar to a dollar coin. Both failed miserably.

We could also save millions by getting rid of the penny, which costs more than a penny to keep in circulation.

We just reject any changes to our currency.

Here in Europe, we have the 5 Euro Bill as smallest paper money.

Works fine. Of course, stripclubs tend to change customers money into custom change so they can tip smaller amounts more :)

I just read that article on yahoo. It sounds like a good and logical argument. Maybe it should be implemented.

If they would design a decent looking coin people would use them. I'm sorry, but as a coin collector myself, the Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea are just plain ugly coins. A scaled down down Morgan dollar would be awesome. My suggestion is to keep the obverse of the Walking Liberty and the reverse of the Morgan. That would be a gorgeous and highly collectible coin.

Whenever I travel to the states, I find that one dollar bills annoy me. Hell, all of your money annoys me, all of the bills look the same and its annoying to have to sort through it and actually look at the corner to see the dollar amount. But up here we have $1 and $2 coins and they seem to work fine. But I can see it being a problem at stripclubs...

I'm going to be blunt. The reason why we fail miserably in switching to a $1 coin in the United States is because we always try to sell the idea! The idea that we need to get people to buy into an idea is such bullshit! Most Americans lack the knowledge to make an educated decision in most areas....so that is never going to work. It's human nature to resist change (pardon the pun)! What we need to do, and I've been saying this since they brought back the Susan B. Anthony dollar (and there have been 2 new ones since), is just get rid of the dollar bill and introduce a dollar coin as a permanent replacement! Hell, reaching a consensus on anything in this country is virtually impossible! So, the treasury needs to take a page from Nike and "Just Do It!!!"

Our money is colorful...each bill is a different color. Ie. $5 bill is blue, $10 bill is purple, $20 bill is green...so its easy to find what you're looking for in your wallet, just grab the right color hehe.

Yeah, Canadian money seems to work pretty well. I was up in Montreal around the time that they did away with the $2 bill (still were using them) & the Loonie and Toonie ($1 & $2 coins) seem to work out okay and Canadians do not seem to have problems with them! So, why can't we Americans get it? I guess that's why the rest of the world is uses the metric system and we still use our contrived system too! Ha ha ha!

It makes the prestige of a note seem less if you also have a $1 form, in the uk the smallest note is £5 and that's about right to me. Even our coins go up to £2 and it works quite well.

Wow, they could save 5.5 billion over 30 years? SO WHAT? There was a study by our own government last week that found we could save 150 billion EVERY YEAR if the beauracrats would eliminate duplicituous jobs and programs. They're never going to do that either so why would we give another moment's thought to saving a measly 5.5 billion over 30 years by making our wallets weigh 5 times as much?

Let's put this in perspective. Our current deficit is 14 fucking TRILLION dollars and rising faster than a raped date under that commie piece of shit Obama. 5.5 billion over 30 years is 183 million per year. At that rate our 14 trillion deficit will be erased in...76,364 years! It won't matter anyway, chairman Mao, I mean Obama can add 5.5 billion to our deficit faster than I can take a shit. By the way, 183 million is about how many workers there are in this country. I'll give my fucking pathetic goverment a buck a year to keep my paper.

I like the idea, and I'm all for the morons here in DC trying to save money, but this is a drop in the bucket trying to bail out a huge sinking ship.

And as pointed out, what would I do at my favorite bar... hand coins to the dancers?? That's just weird. :1orglaugh

Obama is not Communist. Just incompetant.
Even so, he's better than dubya.

Why do people always say "he's better than dubya"? Although an untrained monkey eating his own shit is better than "dubya", I'd still rather have the monkey than Obama.
