Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex wife'

Are these mass killings even a surprise anymore? RIP

Eight killed in massacre at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex wife'

* Gunman, named as ex-military Scott Dekraai, in custody after going on shooting spree at hair salon where ex-wife worked
* Thought to have lost custody court case over son the day before shooting
* Eight dead, including wife Michelle, in worst mass murder in Orange County history
* Salon owner Randy Fannin, among those dead, said to have confronted the gunman before being told to 'shut up'
* 73-year-old woman among those seriously injured
* Only one previous murder in last five years in the quiet area in California - where actress Sandra Bullock lives

Eight people have been killed in a shooting at an upmarket beauty salon in California.

Scott Dekraai, 42, who is the former husband of one of the stylists, is said to have shot a total of nine hairdressers and customers at Salon Meritage, a beauty salon just blocks from the Pacific Ocean in the upscale seaside resort of Seal Beach.

Three people, including a 73-year-old woman, were initially rushed to hospital in critical condition, but two of them have since passed away. One of the victims is thought to be the salon owner. Dekraai's ex-wife, Michelle, was also reportedly among those who were killed.

Dekraai, who used to work in the military, had allegedly threatened violence after losing a court case against Michelle Huff over the custody of their seven-year-old son, Dominic.

In all, one man and five women died at the salon, one man and one woman died after being transported to a nearby hospital, and one woman remained in critical condition.

Orange County authorities rushed to the scene and seized Dekraai in a traffic stop a half-mile from the shooting.

The alleged shooter, who lives locally, was thought to have been wearing body armour during the attack.

When officers raided his car they found multiple weapons, police said.

He didn't offer any resistance when he was arrested.

Seal Beach Police Sergeant Steve Bowles said: 'We believe he is the only shooter. He was taken into custody without injury.'

Witnesses said the gunman was embroiled in a domestic dispute over custody with his ex-wife, Michelle, who worked as a stylist at the salon.

The pair are thought to have a seven-year-old son named Dominic.

Dekraai is said to have moved to the area two years ago after being honourably discharged from the military because of a work-related leg injury.

Police in Seal Beach would not confirm any relationship between the man and any of his victims.

'There are victims throughout the entire salon,' Sergeant Bowles added.

'There are survivors from inside the salon. A crime of this magnitude is not something Seal Beach is familiar with.'

The shooting is reportedly the deadliest mass killing in Orange County history.

Among the victims is thought to be the owner of the salon.

Randy Fannin died in the shooting, according to his niece, Tami Scarcella, 39.

'Randy is dead,' she said while hugging a friend. 'Randy is dead for sure.'

Kimberly Criswell, who owns a salon just two doors down from the scene of the shootings, said she and her customers and employees heard gunshots, and her receptionist saw a man through a window as he was shot in a parking lot.

'There was like a pop, pop and my receptionist screamed, `he just shot that man' and we all ran into the bathroom and locked the door,' Criswell said.

Police confirmed that one of the victims is male.

A middle-aged woman called Cindy was having her hair done by Mr Fannin when the gunman opened fire.

'We thought it was maybe firecrackers,' she told the LA Times.

'But he just didn’t stop. Anybody he saw he was shooting.

'It went boom, boom, boom. I was afraid he was going to shoot everybody.'

Mr Fannin is said to have confronted the gunman before being told to 'shut up' as he continued firing.

Shortly after he was arrested, police arrived at a house on Melody Lane in nearby Huntington Beach and escorted two women to a white car and then roped off the house with crime scene tape.

Neighbours identified photos of the alleged shooter as their neighbour Scott. The house is registered to Scott Dekraai, and one of the licensed cosmetologists at the salon was Michelle Dekraai.

Kari Salveson of Los Alamitos, who attended a service for the victims at SeaCoast Grace Church in Seal Beach, said she had known Michelle Dekraai for several years and was aware that she and her ex-husband were involved in a bitter custody dispute over their son.

She said Michelle Dekraai made her every visit to the salon special.

'She could gab away. She was one of those girlfriends you could never get enough of. She made you smile and she made you laugh,' Salveson said.

Several people who knew Michelle Dekaai also said she sometimes went by her maiden name of Huff and it was unclear which one she was currently using.

The one remaining injured victim is being treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

Some of those inside managed to escape without harm, police said.

Bowles said the bodies of the killed and the wounded were scattered throughout the salon.

One wounded man was found outside the building. It wasn't clear if he was trying to flee when he was shot.

Staying strong: Friends of the victims huddle near Salon Meritage in Seal Beach, California

'We're unsure at this point if he shot from the entrance and people, as they were shot, ran in seeking cover or seeking shelter, but we have fatalities throughout the salon,' he said.

'From my observation, it did look like people were seeking shelter at the time.'

He said the salon was busy, with every hair-dressing station in operation.

Salon employee Lorainne Bruielle, who wasn't working Wednesday, told the Long Beach Press-Telegram the gunman was the husband of another employee.

Bruielle said she talked to the husband of one of the employees involved, who said one employee locked herself in the salon's facial room and was unharmed while another man locked himself in a bathroom but was wounded.

The shooter was spotted fleeing from the scene when police arrived and gave himself up after a short car chase.

Lydia Sosa, who used to work at the salon, said the suspect had gone through a bitter divorce with one of the women who worked there.

'They were never happy for a long, long time,' she told the New York Times.

'She said he was bitter. He was very bitter.'

A local man named Bill Horton added: [It was a] custody battle for seven-year-old son. Ex-Husband lost court case yesterday. Apparently he had been making threats of violence.'

Gasps: A police officer talks to people outside the salon after the fatal shooting

One of her neighbour's told KTLA she took out a restraining order against her former husband on Tuesday.

Another neighbour, Jo Cornhall, added: 'I know there was a custody battle involved with his son, Dominic, who I believe is 7 or 8 years old.'

Dekraai, who worked on tugboats after being discharged by the military, is said to have walked with a limp after a boat accident.

He allegedly remarried Mindy Miguel, his rehab nurse.

She is currently assisting detectives with their investigations, according to neighbours.

Workers in neighbouring businesses said they hid in the bathrooms after hearing shots.

One woman said she was working at a nail salon and hid with about six other people for 15 minutes until they heard the gunman was caught.

The three people who were not killed instantly were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Patients at the hospital said the victims were rushed inside in a horrific state.

'They were bringing them in, and they were all bloodied up,' Biagio Zaby, 67, told the Times.

The quiet beachfront city of approximately 25,000 residents identifies itself as the Gateway to Southern California's Orange County and is located about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Among its famous residents are 'Miss Congeniality' star Sandra Bullock.

It is home to Leisure World, a gated senior citizen community of 9,000 people, as well as the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station military complex.

The city had just one homicide last year and none during the previous three years, according to statistics compiled by the Police Department.

Regulars at the salon reacted in horror when they heard about the shooting.

Kalie Ann wrote on Twitter: 'I go to Salon Meritage all the time and I was just there last Thursday. I can't believe something so horrible happened there.'

Murdered: Six people are thought to have been killed during the shooting at the beauty salon in Seal Beach, California

ORANGE COUNTY'S QUIET BEACH CITY WHICH BOASTED ZERO CRIME

The seafront city of Seal Beach is the gateway to Southern California's Orange County - renowned for its natural beauty and affluent population.

With its gorgeous beaches, the city attracts celebrities looking for a quiet retreat. Among its famous residents is Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock.

The quiet city of approximately 25,000, located about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles, boasts on its website that it has 'retained its quaint, small-town atmosphere' since it was founded in 1915.

The city is home to Leisure World, a gated senior citizen community of 9,000 people, and two-thirds of the city's 13.23 square miles (34.27 square kilometers) are occupied by the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge.

Until now, it also boasted an almost perfect crime rate. Before the shooting there had been just one murder in the city in the past five years. The Salon Meritage massacre is the worst mass murder in Orange County history.

Gun control will never be passed here unfortunatly because there are too many guns in circulation now. Plus, those against gun control believe that if everyone had a gun on them, shootings like this would never happen. I personally have never heard of a case where someone walked into a building and started killing everyone but was shot and killed by a civilian with a gun before he finished the job. Has it ever happened? Who knows. I say just make it illegal to buy bullets and maybe 50-100 years from now, guns will be worthless.

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

Unfortunately this really doesn't surprise me in the slightest. The good old Americans and there crazy gun fetish has again made news.

As for bringing in gun laws i agree with the AP, there are far to many in circulation to be able to bring in a ban or new law against them.

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

For those that claim new "gun laws" will stop this kind of tragedy, you're wrong. Rape, murder, stealing are all outlawed and yet certain people still do it every day. Criminals break the law, and therefore, new laws will unfortunately not deter them in the slightest. For every case like this, there are hundreds/thousands of cases where law abiding citizens in the US have stopped or prevented crimes with firearms.

In short, it's not the guns or the laws that harm people... it's crazy people that harm other people. :2 cents:

What makes you think MORE gun laws will be the answer? :bang:

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

well, not being able to buy a gun as easily as you can, would discourage you from going on a shooting rampage.it makes perfect sense.
why don't you have shootings like that around the world?
I'm talking about regular people just going crazy and start shooting people.
in other countries you may have organized crime-related shootings, but not this kind.in Norway you had one,and that was the one in the last century maybe.
doesn't it bother Americans that anyone can just go buy an automated machine gun and kill anyone that crosses his way?does anyone think that if you carry a gun yourself you'll be able to protect yourself???
don't forget that when the constitution was passed, guns were not what they are today.you needed 5 minutes to reload the thing back then!

and sure, other crimes do take place (like rape etc as mentioned above) but in order to kill 20 people in 30 seconds you need certain types of guns.if you can't buy them so easily, you just won't do it.

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

I like how they tried to wedge Sandra Bullock into this. I wonder how many mass shooting there are that we don't hear about because they didn't take place in that Mini Me guy's hometown and are therefore not news worthy. And why do they gotta show some random fat guy with his tits out and cuffed, looking like he was the shooter and then way later in the article show the killer looking all nice like he was killed and the pic is a sort of remembrance picture?

First off, no one can do that, and haven't been able to do that in a shit long time.
Second California has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

And yes there have been incidents where armed civilians have been able to defeat an attacker, that initiated a workplace shooting, but none has happened recently.

And it's not always about a gun, for a crazy person doesn't need a gun...

China has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

Every once in a while somebody being able to do this is the price of freedom. It's better than the alternative though. The populace being armed is pretty much the last line of defense, and as time goes on, the only realistic one left that stands between governments getting tyrannical with their people. That is unless everybody in other places in the world has some strange trust of the people that govern them (Which reading this board and other places seems that almost nobody does. People's dislike and distrust of politicians seems like it's pretty universal around the world.) and think they will always have your best interest at heart and never do anything bad to you. Throwing rocks at soldiers or other agents of the powers that be someday sent to kill you, your descendants, or somebody else isn't going to do much good, and it's a matter of when it happens, if human history is any indication, not if.

What people forget is mass killings like this are still an extremely small percentage of homicides, but gather a lot more media attention. Most murders could be done almost as easily if the person sneaked up near somebody and stabbed the person they wanted to die.

In the wrong place at the wrong time: The eight innocent victims gunned down in 'senseless' Seal Beach salon massacre

* Police name eight people killed in shooting spree - including suspect's former wife, the salon owner, a young soccer mum and a newlywed who was cutting her elderly mother's hair
* Ex-military Scott Dekraai in custody after allegedly going on rampage at hair salon in Orange County, California
* Thought to have lost custody court case over son the day before shooting
* Worst case of mass murder in O.C. history
* Just one other murder in last five years in small city where actress Sandra Bullock lives
* Dekraai's close friend says he should face death penalty

Re: Eight dead at Orange County hair salon as crazed gunman 'targets hairdresser ex w

what exactly is this "freedom" one has to pay the price for?
why do some Americans think they are more "free" than other people in the world?
why are Americans "more free" than Germans,French,Australians,Italians,Koreans,
Canadians or Japanese etc etc?
what makes you think that the US government will not get (if it has not already been in the past) tyrannical because people (have the right to) carry guns?
right now people protest on Wall Street and the police is all over their asses.Would the police be more "polite" if the protesters carried guns???wouldn't the cops arrest or spray anybody at will if he was had a guns around his waist?
of course they wouldn't arrest him...they would just SHOOT him!!! would that be tyranny or not?

what is it with Americans and this illusion of exceptional freedom they think they have?it probably comes from the fact that 200 years ago people ACTUALLY went to the US to be free.but right now??and what freedom can one actually exercise thanks to a gun?

I'm not bashing or anything, don't get me wrong,I'm just asking.

I think that Europe has had it's share of gun violence in the past few years including mass killings. Those stringent gun laws are really helping aren't they?

And the places that they occurred have a much smaller population than the U.S.

What an ignorant statement.

today in France,a guy went into a police station and killed an police officer with a sword (!!!!!!!!),injuring two others, because he was denied a gun permit!!!!!!!!
imagine what this guy would (could) have done in a place where he could just buy a gun very easily.
he didn't go crazy because he was denied the permit,he was already crazy before, and that's why he was probably denied it.
mass killings in Europe happen way less often then in the US.

and nobody said that they don't happen.that's exactly the point:if they happen despite the gun laws, imagine what would happen if there were no laws!!!
it's like saying:stealing is illegal but it still happens,so let's make it legal!!!does that make sense?
