Dwarf Star Gulps Giant To Form Supernova

A team of European and American astronomers has announced the discovery of the best evidence yet for the nature of the star systems that explode as type Ia supernovae. The team obtained a unique set of observations with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and the Keck I 10-meter telescope in Hawaii.

And here I thought you were talking about Craig Charles - though I realize most will have no idea what I mean. :)

Interesting, nonetheless though.

I know his name but don't think he's involved. :)

No doubt.

But it does not speak well of me that all I did was read the first two words of this thread and proceeded to charge into it thinking it was (possibly) about a star of a onetime British comedy scifi series (Red Dwarf) that ended production 8 years ago.

44 years old and I still have the attention span (and/or patience) of someone at least 1/4 of that number.
:)

This kind of stuff always fascinates me. HERE is more info about supernovas.:)

I don't know what the article said, but does that mean they actually caught a supernovae in the process of happening? They don't happen that often so it would be good fortune.
