Worth checking out Rifts then.

This book uses the First Edition Rules
Nearly 30 character classes: Cyborgs, Juicers, Dragons, Crazies, Cyber-knights, Psi-stalkers, Line Walkers, and much more!
Super-science and high technology: Bionics, cybernetics, power armor, and mega-damage weapons.
A transformed Earth where magic is a reality and supernatural creatures from the rifts stalk human prey.
Compatible with Heroes Unlimited, TMNT & Other Strangeness, Beyond the Supernatural, Mechanoids, and Palladium's other role-playing games.

Except where shadowrun has a lot of story and information pre-written, Rifts leaves still leaves a lot to the imagination. The rules will be interesting to learn :) I'd definately recommend it, much to sink your teeth into.

From what I understand RIFTS needs a lot of system mastery from the person running it because there are a lot of potentially very unbalancing things in the system. I don't know if it would be good for somebody that's new to that sort of thing. :dunno:

Yeah probably going to take you a while to understand the rules as there really isnt a basic rule system (although the palladium rule system should be a useful rule system to learn about). But you can chop and add. Start with your imagination open and use the rulebook to play. I don't think its a game that can be controlled easily, but its a lot of fun which if it leads in the right direction with the characters it'll be a blast and well worth the effort. Although it is useful for players to have their own copy of the rule book its not essential aslong as you share and let your players familiarise themselves with what is going on.

I just contributed for a kickstarter project for the first time for a role playing game. I'm kind of sad I missed out on the Shadowrun and Wasteland 2 ones though. Hopefully those will be sold later once they are developed.

I can see the Shadowrun, Wasteland 2, or the Ogre board game getting the funding amount it did, maybe, but The Order of the Stick one was out there also. It might be the most successful kickstarter type thing that has been done, or at least the most successful one I know about. I can't say I'm surprised about it though. I guess that's what happens when you can build up enough good will with people.

I just did the one for Rappan Athuk to get the faux leather bound book with the extras they are putting out. I never got it when it came out years ago, and it's being updated for the Pathfinder system. Interestingly for both that and the Slumbering Tsar book I have there are similarities with both of them and a homebrew campaign world I have been working on that will let me mine both of them a lot for material.

The success of the Shadowrun stuff almost makes me wish FASA would have let the Battletech stuff go to somebody else a long time ago and it was being done this way also. Then we might get something good out of it for once in a long time instead of the mire of suckitude it has been under for a long time now. It was once one of my favorite fictional setting and to see what has happened to it makes me sad.

ha! i dont get what a kickstarter is, but that funny!

The website might be able to explain it better than I can, but basically it's a method of "crowdsourcing" for things that producers don't think they will be able to get the funding or investment for through traditional means to be able to create a product, or where they just can't afford to take on the risk of producing something that won't sell, yet they are pretty sure a lot of people out there would like to see anyhow.

What happens is that people interested in the project help fund the project to meat a goal that will allow it to come about and be created. If the goal isn't meet then they don't have to pay anything and it doesn't happen. If the producers get enough support though they they can go ahead and make things that people want that probably wouldn't have come about another way. Usually the people that help fund the project get the product or at lest part of what is produced by the funding. It also allows a producer to see how in demand something is in a way that might not be practical or even possible any other way. Often they will throw in a lot more bonus stuff for the people that help fund a project this way than somebody that just buys it afterwards.

This is what I've supported with kickstarter, still waiting for the droid app which should come out this month: https://www.zombiesrungame.com/

Today marked my return to the Amsterdam Meetup Guild. I ran a game of Paranoia, as I had mentioned before. The simple question that needed answering is...how many trouble shooters does it take to screw in a lightbulb. Answer? 1. The other 5 cower in a corner hoping that whatever happens, doesn't happen to them.

Sounds about right. :D

Now bed. IF I can ever get off the phone with expedia. Sigh.

Hopefully for them it's a really BIG room with corners far away.

...then again that would make those corners very dark and foreboding. They really can't win, can they? :1orglaugh

Your Friend the Computer doesn't know what this "win" may be. ;-)

What was even better? Instead of using tokens for perversity points (they can use them to "bribe" the GM) I use mini candy bars. After the mounds like candies, NOBODY would sacrifice the snickers, mars, twix, or dove with caramel. They all rather die. Multiple times.

Did you get to use your eyeball prop in this one?

I thought about it, but we took the train and then the tram to the pup where the meetups are held. Didn't want the eyeball to get ruined along the way.

I guess the next step is to build a case for the eyeball. Plus people wouldn't think your a weirdo for carrying around a large eyeball. ;)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Since I'm going to run a series of Paranoia games at Conception next year (the group that played the previous game will get to leave notes for the next team of trouble shooters), I'll be making more props to take along with me. Not sure what yet though. Perhaps I'll make them wear paper hats or something like that.
