The new "Net Neutrality" bill that was just passed effectively socializes the Internet. Has anyone else out there read the full text of the bill?

Obviously, this is bad news for any online entrepreneur, (that means everyone who runs an adult website, too) but also it's bad news for anyone who values freedom of speech on the Internet whatsoever!

I've started an online petition to get it repealed:

Would everyone out there help me to make this go viral? Re-post it everywhere you can, sign it, get friends to sign it, email to everyone you know, etc.
Seriously! If you don't believe me, Google the bill and read the whole thing for yourself! This is a major step toward a government owned and run, totally censored Internet!

Please go sign this petition and help it go viral!
Thanks for reading.

This "anti-socialism" nonsense that´s being used by people (usually americans) who apparently haven´t got a fucking clue what socialism really means is really starting to piss me off.

the new net neutrality bill is definitely not meant to keep the internet open and free but unfortunately it seems that most people don't understand that and don't care to

Hey Landing Pad, I am living in Germany so I haven't read that bill, but as things seem to move in a similar direction, can you please share a link to the bill, or a good article about it?

Please, not Fox news lol

And, please, be careful with labeling 'socialist', 'fascist' or whatever. Even though socialist governments did and do censoring, I have the impression that as much as Glenn Beck screams about Nazi Comies, this is not what actually happens.

Is this what we are talking about?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality_in_the_United_States

Many broadband providers block common service ports, such as port 25 (SMTP) or port 80 (HTTP), preventing consumers (and botnets) from hosting web and email servers unless they upgrade to a "business" account.

[...]

On December 21, 2010, the FCC approved new rules banning cable television and telephone service providers from preventing access to competitors or certain web sites such as Netflix. The rules would not keep ISPs from charging more for faster access. Republicans in Congress plan to reverse the rules through legislation.

Is this the socialist revolution we're supposed to be afraid of? Heh... to quote the man... the ledgend... the 1970's movie character: "Sheriff... do the letters eff oh mean anything to you?". :D

Hell yeah I say... go for it! Twist the arms of the ISP's and make the stop trying to force us to do their bidding. Either they sell us an internet connection or they don't... not some half-baked "You can only use what I tell you to" solution. That(!), if anything is socialism: big brother - and his entrepreneuring little bro - telling you what you can and cannot do on your connection.

The Chinese have the best economy. They are our financial masters. They truly censor the internet. Perhaps America should censor the internet and maybe we'll get our economy back on track?

Well, let's face it, we're all being monitored each and everytime we log on, so it's probably a great tool for our intelligence friends. I know they probably LOVE terrorist and "hate" sites, which they can flag your ass the second you log on. :dunno:

I remember reading an article about how the FBI is only able to monitor about 3% of the internet. Beyond that they have to go by what people report and end up in their flagged sites alerts.

Maybe they just put that figure out there to mislead us. I just doubt it's that low. There is just so much technology that I'm sure they have all our asses.

You want 100,000,000 to sign your petition?

Good luck with that...

Our school systems are in the shitter, so our kids can't add & subtract or read & write much of the time... their parents either. The most disturbing part of it all (IMO) is that so many Americans are now proud of their ignorance, or they're just unaware of their ignorance. A lot of these people admire intellectually lazy people like Sarah P@lin because she rails against the "elitists". Who are the elite? Much like how the nosepickers in elementary or high school disliked the kids who studied and got good grades, the "elite" of today are disliked by the lazy and the ignorant for being "teachers' pets"... the "elitists". Don't get me wrong; nobody knows everything. We're ALL ignorant of something (probably most things). But the cure for that is not to use misapplied terms when there's an issue that you care about. The cure is not to use foolish, childish hyperbole to stir up other people. On that thread about the use of the Latin fasces, the OP continued to get into a twist because he didn't understand the basics of the Roman Republic. He didn't seem to know the difference between the governmental structure that was in place during the Republic and that which was in place after Octavian became Augustus, thereby becoming the first Roman Emperor. Who cares about all that, when we have a symbol called the "fasces", which gave birth to the word "fascism"... and by gosh, the dang U.S. government has 'em in the capitol???!!! "Hide the youngins under the bed, Mildred! The gubment is comin' to git us!!!"

The same is true in this thread. I don't know if these net neutrality proposals are good or bad for the average person, or the internet on whole. But being that the OP here has misapplied a term in the basis of his argument (for the sake of being hyperbolic - just like the "they's gonna unplug grandma!" anti healthcare reform crowd), I'm now a LOT less inclined to even look at his petition, much less sign it. I also don't engage people in conversation if they're standing on a street corner in the rain, holding a Bible and shouting at the top of their lungs. "Crazy" is only cute when people can turn it on & off at will. That's a little gem of wisdom from my girlfriend. And I think she's right on that one.
