Baseball needs a salary cap. The NL needs to be forced to install the DH. Pitchers need to be timed in between pitches.

This would make baseball more competitive, quicker and more interesting for the TV viewer.

As an avid traditionalist baseball fan, I endorse this.
Yes, endorse this.
Not only do teams get an automatic out with the DH, but there have been way too many injuries coming from pitchers attempting hit and run the bases. Yeah, I know..."they go over that in spring training." So what. Pitchers are more concerned about getting their mechanics in line and training to position themselves so they are not getting killed by a line drive. Why should he spend a good amount of time learning to do something he is only going to do about 50 times a year?
I mean, sure, double switches are fun to watch. There was nothing like watching Jerry Narron manage himself out of a game as he tried to figure out the concept.
IN the end, the only valid reason I hear to hold onto the pitcher's spot in the batting order is "tradition." And while tradition can be a marvelous thing, sometimes, it is better to move on to the future.

I agree with the salary cap, the rest not so much.

Baseball does not need a salary cap, that would ruin the game just like it did to the NFL. What it really needs is for the team owners' that benefit from the luxury tax to actually put the money back into their team and not into their pockets. EVERY single team is owned my multi-billionaires, they could spend they just choose not to with the exception of the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, Mets and a few others. Don't get mad at the owners that actually care about their teams.

How did it ruin the NFL? It made for parity and the league is better for it.

We are not mad at the owners that care about their team, hell all they care about is making more money. What I am mad about is that Jeter makes more than the ENTIRE Pittsburgh Pirates active rooster. Salary Cap would make every team over the course of time more and more competitive and drive down the huge insane salaries that ball players make.

Just what I said too lazy.

Soccer where they play for two hours and might tie or it might be 1-0?

There are places where they play no extra innings and there are ties. And lower scoring means more suspense as each goal is so vital. Now I like baseball, there just needs to be ways to shortening it. Look at college football, the games are at least 30 minutes shorter than a few years ago.

No, we will be keeping baseball like it is, no need to change it.

People will have to stop being too lazy to sit and watch the game.

The only people that would benefit from a salary cap would the be the owners. Getting star players for basically chump change and they would pocket all the additional revenue that could have gone towards player salaries. A residual effect of this would only make the best players want to come to the Yankees or Red Sox even more for example instead of one of the 'lesser' teams. Why would I go to the Pirates and get paid the same that I would if I were playing for the storied New York Yankees thusly getting tons of exposure in that big market? Furthermore, remember 1994? ALL of the owners wanted a salary cap but the powerful MLBPA (the players association) did not and effectively ended the season (which sucks cuz Mattingly may have gotten a ring that year). So, in short, Salary Cap=great for owners; bad for players and fans (since they'll still have the exuberant ticket prices while paying the players dirt cheap salaries.)

What they should do is put a league MINIMUM salary for teams and enforce more strictly how luxury tax proceeds are used so teams like the Devil Rays (with the exception of 2008) don't take in more money per year in luxury tax money than they spent on their entire salary (from 2003-2007).

Oh and the NFL's supposed parity is just an illusion. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704224004574489773943949070.html Just look at the team records and/or the scores and you'll see just that which is why they are thinking of abolishing it for the 2010 or at least making drastic changes.

Baseball doesn't just need a salary cap. It also needs a salary floor and VERY EXTENSIVE REVENUE SHARING to go along with it. The reason since the 1960s why the NFL overtook MLB as the dominate sport in the country is because of those three things. If every team made the same money you wouldn't have teams just getting all the best players because of prestige. It doesn't happen in the NFL. It doesn't happen in the NHL, and it doesn't happen in the NBA. It wouldn't happen in baseball if that happened either. Players care about getting paid as much as they can first and foremost, and there can only be so many people on one roster. If somebody is offering up the money, one of the handful of best players will take it, even for an organization like the Lions or the Raiders.

Plus as an integrity of the game aspect it's deplorable that teams get that much of a huge advantage that has nothing to do with the skill of the players on the field, the coaching staff ability to run a team, or the savvy of the front office staff to acquire players and pick the right ones. Don't fool yourself neither side in the upcoming NFL labor talks is using the elimination of the salary cap to enhance to league, they are using it as a bargaining chip. The reason there is still a parity divide in the NFL is because the parity in everything else gives smart teams the advantage for being smart or running an organization well, and unlike in MLB not because they have more cash than the other teams. Teams don't get turns at winning just because they are in the league. (Ironically, that whole teams should get turns to win is a Bud Selig philosophy. :1orglaugh) They still have to earn it, they just have to earn it fairly.

With that out of the way there are good and bad aspects about baseball. Unfortunately, most of the bad aspects other than what was stated above, have been because of players screwing around making the games take longer than they need to and the need to squeeze every advertising dollar out by having as many commercials in between innings. In they cut down on those and implemented the time limits that umpires already have a right to install it would help pick up the pace a lot and make it interesting to more people again.

I think the DH needs to be standardized and pitchers should bat. Without the DH, the pitcher batting truly is a dead-at-bat and ridiculous, imo.

you mean pitchers shouldnt bat?
if so i agree, always have.
first of all, they should be resting in between innings.
plus it creates all kinds of stupid, and boring strategys like intentional walks ect.
plus id rather see a dh at the plate than a pitcher who you really cant expect much from.

I agree about the money to an extent. lower the price of tickets and food at the parks.
maybe give the employees a raise. and less commercials on tv.
make it free on tv again.
theres just so many people in the country today that they can charge whatever they want, enough fools will pay it.

plus it creates all kinds of stupid, and boring strategys like intentional walks ect.

I always hated that, but what makes me even more irritated about it is that the vast majority of the time they happen intentional walks are just a bad idea and counterproductive.

Yes, it does. Take MLB for example if you're a fan of the Royals or Pirates it's not really fun because your teams out of the playoffs by the middle of June. You essentially have the same teams making it into the playoffs every year, oh look it's Yankees vs. Red Sox again. :nanner:

Seems to me that (having a number of terrible teams that is) is a problem in every major sport.

The only time baseball sucks is when the Yankees win the championship.

Very true.

Baseball is our national sport, our national pastime. Joining together as men to reward the act of running around in a circle. I will thank you not to take its name in vain, Namreg.

Points to you for the GTA: Vice City reference.

If we're looking for a quicker game, cut out the God-forsaken requisite three minute commercial between innings. Umpires are actually often held back from starting play if the commercials aren't done.

On a side note, boy, this poll certainly isn't biased now is it?
