Disney to buy Marvel Comics in $4 billion deal

So, does this mean Tom Hanks will play the Riddler, with a Phil Collins tune in the background as Batman and Riddler walk hand-in-hand into the sunset?

 wish I had started Marvel Comics...

This would be one of those things that I would have hated if it wasn't for the fact that comics went downhill years ago. Still, I bet in the end this doesn't end up well. Even if it takes a long time for the more serious repercussions to play out.

I see this as very good news. Marvel now has a pretty big parent company backing them which means they will have money which means they can take more risks now with other types of comics. The deal doesn't affect the movie franchises until Marvel's deals with those companies have expired and then Disney/Marvel will be the ones distributing the movies. Warner Bros. has DC, Disney has Marvel and the world will not end.

I hope they are doing this just for the money and don't touch the creative direction. I love the darker tone in the Marvel series and all I can imagine Disney doing is making them more "family friendly".

I read somewhere that with them sealing the deal on this. It will allow Disney to focus on the young male viewer now. As they lost a great deal in ground in the male viewer department. Most of their income comes from girly movies and kiddy movies. Expect a watered down Spiderman and the likes from here on. I mean Spiderman and that isn't mega violent, but they are more violent than anything Disney does. And I don't see Disney opting to go down that road and damage their so-called clean image with the girl and kid viewers.

Spiderman holding hands with his arch enemy while they dance and skip through medows collecting daiseys is the thing of the future now.

If Marvel goes to crap like DC has, then hopefully someone new will come along to make good comics, like Image did in the 90's.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Marvel movies suck anyway, so Disney becoming the new owners to all of their rights isn't going to hurt anything. Now, as far as the actual COMICS go...I hope they don't mess shit up. I just have an awful feeling that Disney will start cross-promoting their stupid bullshit through the avenue of Marvel Comics. That would just be awful.

I agree it would be nice if somebody comes along as a well funded group with a lot of resources and starts making good comics again.

To be honest though, the thing is, Image really didn't make good comics for the most part. People were swayed because a lot of popular artist at the time formed it, but quite frankly most of them didn't know what the hell they were doing businesswise, and most of the creative material they came up with wasn’t that good at all. Once the new car smell wore off and some years went by Image was put up to the challenge and found very wanting. It might have taken some fans a couple of years to realize that, but they eventually did. For all the people that thought they had stuck it good to Marvel and showed them, including the artist themselves, in all actuality Marvel definitely had the last laugh. It took a while, but they did. None of that even mentions the infighting, the squabbling, the blatant rip offs some of them came up with, the fact some of them couldn't keep a schedule to save their life, the rumors of some people not getting paid on time, both employees and suppliers, the sheer hypocrisy most of them had about wanting creative control over intellectual work by other creators that worked for them even as they claimed to leave Marvel because of that very reason of Marvel doing that to them. It wasn't like they were doing all that to create masterpieces over there while it happened either. With a few exceptions most of the comics sucked.

They didn't want to create a system that was less oppressive in there eyes, even if that's what they said. They just wanted to be the ones in control over it. There was also a lot of shady things that are speculated to have gone on with a lot of people in control of a lot of the business aspects where some people were screwing the others. Really Image was a big house of cards and eventually it fell down. I don't think I would want a repeat of that.

As long as Marvel does not allow the executives of Disney to dictate how they should write or market their comics/movies/cartoon production, I have no problem with the deal.

Actually, I think Image had some of the best comics. I sold my comics long ago, but if I ever decided to start collecting again the first two series I would get would be Spawn and Gen 13.
