The idea of goth has changed dramatically even without my short lifetime. I wasn't terribly impressed with it back then, either, but it does seem to have lost its way. (Kind of like emo, which I don't recognize AT ALL)
When I knew some goths, they were very distinct from punks and punk rock and that whole scene. Advertising a band or wearing a band shirt of any kind was really a no-no.
As for the fishnets today, I hardly think they're just limited to goths or whores. They're quite in fashion in central and eastern Europe right now among all women under 50 (who have decent legs) - including the most wholesome and non-goth.
