Diabetes (anyone here got it or know anyone that has it?)

I went to the doc's yesterday and according to him it's Type 2 I have. I have an appointment with the nurse at the local GP's surgery on the 5th of October for further info and an exam or something. I will be getting it confirmed 110% before I accept any medication of any sort for this. The skill of the doctors at my local surgery are not exactly the most reliable. Yeah the doc that saw me was probably the most competent of the bunch. But it still does nothing for morale. It is possible that things are what they are through stress and high sugar intake and nothing else (or am I wrong?). I am going to have to it confirmed for definite even if it means another blood test to make sure. This ain't no laffing matter.

Does anyone here suffer from Diabetes or know anyone that suffers from it?. If it's true then bang goes my chinese takeaways and salt intake etc etc.

Raven,
While it is a pain in the ass (literally, if that's your injection site...), this is a disease that can largely be managed with lifestyle. I know several people who suffer this, and, once diagnosed, made some changes in their lives that made the disease no big sweat. They didn't have to give up the chinese take away, they had to moderate it. They got into shape, and felt better about themselves than ever before. It may turn out that this forces you to make some lifestyle choices that are really good for you, and, while difficult to accomplish, these choices will ultimately make your life better, and not just because of your diabetes.

That said, I'm sorry to hear of your diagnoses. No one needs this kind of shit in their life. I hope things go smoothly, and that you get this under control quickly.

If I were in your situation I would drastically cut back on sugars and increase my fiber intake until the appointment. That way you can be sure of whether it was a false positive or not.

Thing is guys I am not showing any of the major symptoms of the illness. This is what makes me think it's a mistake of some sort on their behalf. I don't abuse the takeaway thing or the salt thing (ok I lie about the salt thing). I do need to lose weight I know I do. I also know that I need to change my exercise routine too. It's been on the cards and now it needs to be done. I am not what you would call Jabba the Hutt in weight. But then again according to the surgery they think everyone is obese that isn't Paris Hilton in weight, stoopid fucks!. I would say I am about two stone over the average weight for someone my age. But yeah I definitely need to improve my eating habits and variety in diet (more fruit cos I don't eat fruit at all just now and other things similar). I only drink diet sodas and diet energy drinks. And I only take like two level spoons of sugar in my tea as well now.

*****EDIT*****

According to the doctor from what he said yesterday it could be medication (pills) not the injection I will be getting. I guess I'll find out more when I see the nurse on the 5th of Oct.

Is it pills or the injection you are getting pal?

Raven,
I hope it is nothing but it's better to find out now and manage it now than start having complications from it. The one thing I learned from my uncle is to be careful of any injuries (cuts, scrapes, etc.). He had a cut on his foot that would not heal properly and got to the point that they wanted to amputate. He was a minister and felt that he came here with 2 arms & legs, he was going to leave with 2 arms & legs. Bear in mind he was in his late 70's.

I read about that. The whole cuts and things not healing properly. I couldn't sleep properly last night for thinking about what the doc said to me. And yes, I will do my damnedest to not cut myself or fall or whatever that could lead to such things. I think the doc said I would get a foot examination from the nurse when I go to see her. My mother is diabetic apparently as well. She gets Gliclazide for it.

Does anyone know what type of Diabetes is was that Lucio Fulci had?. I know he had to take injections every day so maybe it was Type 1.

There are. I'm just trying to inject some humour into the situation.

Feel free to punch me liberally about the neck and face.

You had me wondering there for a second. I even checked google after I read your post haha.

My dad's side of the family seems to get Type 2 around age 30 regardless of weight or health. My father is pushing 70 and is one of the fittest men I know. Up until probably 3 years ago he controlled his diabetes 100% with diet and exercise. It's just gotten to the point that his body can't regulate things anymore and he needs the injections to help him out.

My FIL was diagnosed last year and is struggling badly with it. He's one of those who thinks "oh, a little of this won't hurt" but finds out that he doesn't feel so good afterwards. He's slowly learning though.

Me? I seemed to dodge the bullet and am doing my best right now to keep it that way. I did find out by accident that I thrive a lot better on a much lower carb diet (usually only around 30g of carbs a day), and evidently those of us who have type 2 running in their family tend to do better eating lower carb in general. The hubby claims I'm a much nicer person if I can't eat on schedule.

Anyhow, I would go and get a second opinion before taking medication. I'd also find out if you do have it, is it 100% necessary to take insulin or are you able to control it with diet and exercise? If you do, chances are if you lose 5 or 6kg, you can probably go off it again. It's not like thyroid meds that will screw you over once you go on it.

Sorry to hear about the family members that have it. It's good that they are ok though even though they have it. I am definitely going to get a second opinion/test done before taking medication of any type. And yes I'll come back to this thread again (if it's still here - if not I'll make another thread) once I find out what it is I have exactly and what needs to be done. I think they do some sort of test ever six months or once a year to see how the illness is doing. So like you said if it goes well, if luck shines down on me, I could go off it again. Time will tell on this. And time has a way of taking time with regards to finding out these things. I'll definitely keep in touch on here tell you what happens.

Thanks for responding Petra (and everyone else as well).

Wow looks like most people (especially Americans?) don't know too much about this huh? You all just heard something here and there about the disease...Many myths, too...

As a paramedic I work with people with diabetes every day. And I had to learn a lot about it during my apprenticeship.

It's really a bad disease that more and more people get with all the sugar and fat in foods...

Btw Smittmaestro has it, too.

The takeaways I buy from the local Chinese place definitely ned to be drastically cut down. Most definitely. I mean when I think about it imagine the amount of fat (greeze) in the meals through frying it and whatever. Tasty it is, but I can definitely cut down on them. I am not reliant on them. Over the past day and a half everytime I make a meal I have found myself reaching for the salt tub every damn time. And everytime I do it, I then remember the situation and screamin inside my head "AAAHH!!!! FUUUUCK!!!" and then put the salt tub back on the shelve. It's just force of habit that makes me reach for the salt. They take the damn salt out if most things these days and the taste of the foods they do it with suffers drastically through it. I guess though that I am just going to have to live with it now. Grin and bare it as they say. Better than than things not going well I guess. I live in Scotland by the way. Incase some don't already know. And you are correct, a lot of folks don't know a whole lot about the illness/disease.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Carbs are another thing you have to watch...they turn to sugar. My Aunt has it, and when she lived at home, she ate a lot of Italian bread...A LOT of Italian bread. She was on pills, not shots, but her diet wasn't right, and she wasn't eating enough, her sugar would crash, and she fell a couple of times, and sadly she had to go to a nursing home, because I couldn't take care of her. Now, she takes nothing, completely controlled through diet, she eats 3 regular meals, at regular times, and has had no problems with that situation anymore. She has other problems, but that's not diabetes related.

Beer has lots of carbs.

Is somewhere outhere.
Type 1 diabetes is worse than type 2.Most type 2 sufferers can get by without daily injections of insulin by taking
tablets instead, whereas type 1's have to take injections daily or risk being in a bad way.

As for your diet. The chinkies have to be cut dramatically, and if it was me i'd maybe have one, once a week instead
of it being a daily ritual. As for drinking you would be better kissing that goodbye because alcohol as revidffum says
is full of sugar and a night out on the lash would certenly fuck you up big time.If diabetes sufferers don't take care
of themselves right then some can lose their eyesight and can even have parts of their body become gangrenous.
But that is mostly caused by smoking excessively ;)

Having Diabetes is a serious disease but if you can manage it well then you can have a normal life just like anyone
else :)

I myself isn't a diabetes sufferer but my mother has been a type 1 sufferer for the past 30 years.
