December 21 2012

ah yes the mayans. they obviously knew everything. that's why they rule the world

How in the world could the Mayans choose 2012 when they never heard of and lived loooooooong before Christ?
They didn't write it as "2012". They likely wrote how many years and days until the world ends. Someone did the math and calculated what the date they predicted was.

I don't think they did choose 2012.That is what if you translated their calender to ours the supposed date of the end of the world comes out to be.Them and nosrtadameus probably all had good laughs when they did such predictions.:1orglaugh

Nikkala made me do it!
December 5, December 12 and December 21, 2012 have all been predicted as dates for "the end" in various places. That'll be one tough month! :crash:

Whatever name you have for God, whatever a calendar says, I believe nothing is going to happen any time soon. Why? If we were put on this planet for a reason, I think the higher power would want to see us humans do everything we can possibly do. We have just began to see what technology can do with medicine, computers, etc. Doctors, for example, know pretty much everything about the human heart, but know very, very little about what the brain can do. What causes mental retardation? How can Alzheimers disease be prevented? That's the kind of things I'm talking about. These doomsday theories are getting old. Yes the end of the world will come, but not in any of our lifetimes, because within the 50 years or so, humans will still not know very much about what we can do a species.

Lets not make this religious!

No, but in the next 50 years is more than enough time to eradicate all human life from the planet! The end of the world will not come in our lifetimes you are correct about that! Hell earth could be hit by a meteor half its size and bounce back, over the course of millions of years. The sun dying is really the only major threat to our planet as far as its existence goes. You can rest assured that no human will ever see the end of the world.

HOWEVER, the end of humanity...well...thats a whole other story!

Not to be a nitpicker, but though the Mayan civilization started long before Christ, it generally is considered to extend at least until the 8th or 9th century after Christ.

As far as when exactly the Mayan calendar was crafted to "predict" this date, that I do not know. I think most likely it was created, then modified and changed over time continuously, possibly until the end of the civilization.

I have to say I couldn't disagree more.First I don't beleive in a higher power that has any plan for us.2nd since the 1960s mankind has had the potential to possibly destroy the human race entirely with Nuclear weapons. If there ever is a lot of them set off at once no one really knows what would happen, the planet could easily be made devoid of human life that way.How likely that is is debatable but it is entirely possible. And while I agree these old ancient predictions are ridiculous what is not ridiculous are the warnings from scientists about whats happening with climate change. And the warning is that it won't be long before you see devasting effects(decades at the most). And the idea that technology which is what got us into this fix in the 1st place will get us out of it I guess is the only slim hope at present given what people are willing to do but seems remote to me.Yeah humans are smart maybe too smart for our own good in being able to develope in ways in the last hundred years or so never seen before.Population explosion, people living longer having more impact is all putting the whole thing at risk.

The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
This thread is really dark.

Why can't the end of humanity be cheerful? Like, a comet hits the earth, and it's made of gummy bears. And then we all eat the gummy bears, but they're so good we all eat too much and die?

...Oh wait, that's not too cheerful...

That makes me cheerfull I love gummy bears, but what would make me really happy would be to see eveyone else die before me and then I die as the last man alive. That would make me so happy.

Like the black death or the mayan ghosts rising from their graves and then they decapatate eveyone.

I might break into song.

I see we agree to disagree. While you defend these scientists, even though I'm not religious, if there's one source that may speak the truth and that's the Bible. What does it say in Revelations, that the world will be destroyed the 2nd and last time by fire? Not by some man-made object, but by fire and God's own hand, if you believe that kind of thing. I haven't heard one of these scientists say that the climate condition isn't man-made. It is man-made and in that regard nothing of that sort or any weapon of mass destruction is going to destroy this planet. Sure we've had the ability and opportunity to destroy it on several occasions, but we haven't have we? I'm of the firm mind that when the planet is destroyed, it will be after humans accomplish everything we can physically and mentally do and it will be by some higher power and not by man's own hand.

NO NO NO!!! This is your song Eve of Destruction

That is my song was when it came out and nothing has happened since that tells me it was off base in fact quite the opposite. All we feared then(at least most of us,some scientists saw all this coming back then and before) was something extroadinary like a nuclear holocaust not that just the way we lived was going to possibly change the world and put us at risk but that is exactaly where were at.Go look at what Hanson the top scientist in climatology at Nasa said to congress couple months ago.He said get Co2 levels down to 1978 levels soon or within 20 years we face mass extinctions and he isn't talking something that doesn't include humans.
