Really it is terrible. Even though I have heard only a couple of country songs, I am going to go ahead a say that the entire genre sucks just to be safe.

Overall yes country is indeed shitty. I think theres an important distinction to be made though. I have much respect for old school people like Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash.

That being said, people like Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, and Tobey Keith can kiss my ass.

Now to be fair, Cash was too f'n cool for lables. Country music was the first music that I made the decision to get into. Now this was back in the late 70's and there was Waylon, Willie, Hag and Hank, Jr. still getting air time. The last few years however, meh. I will listen to anything that is good. Country, Blues, Rock, Metal, R&B and Rap. Popularity does not automatically mean good. Sometimes the majority just means the morons are all on the same side.
